I am researching the family of Margaret Purcell who was born about 1831 in the Parish of St John's, County Kilkenny. At this time the family were living at Johns Well.

Margaret's parents were William Purcell (labourer) and Mary Whelan. William and Mary were married on 7 February 1831. At the time of their marriage they lived at Sandfordscourt.

Margaret migrated to Australia, arriving in Sydney on The Bloomer on 26 July 1853. She apparently emigrated when her father remarried as she did not get on with her stepmother. On the ship's indent, she was described as aged twenty-one and a farm servant from Newpark.

In 1855 Margaret had saved enough money to bring her brother Thomas to Australia. He arrived on 17 May 1855 on The Matoaka.

Any information about this family would be very welcome.

Thanks

Elaine

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

I searched Roots Ireland and found a transcription of Margaret's baptismal record and also a record for a sister Anne in 1835 in St. Canice's. They were living in New Park where she left in 1855.

The 1849 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing for St. Canice's parish showed a William Purcell on Flood St. This may be your ancestor or another William Purcell.
