I am looking for information on a James Attridge who married a Mary Anne McCarthy on Feb 25, 1869 They had 9 children -Margaret, Patrick,Nellie ( Ellen) , Denis, James, Michael, John, Thomas and Annie. John J. Attridge ( my great grandfather) emigrated to the US. I would like to find info on James' parents and where they lived. I would also like to know if he was related to the Captain James Attridge of the timber ship, Jeannie Johnston. Thank you!

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

Your Attridge family lived in Forenaght townland in Castlehaven civil parish. See the 1901 and 1911 censuses below. James Attridge died in 1915 and Mary in 1923. See links to civil death records. You will have to sign-in to see the records.

The marriage of James and Mary Anne occurred in 1868 and their father's names were John Attridge and James McCarthy.

I was unable to locate a baptismal record for a James Attridge with a father John. Castlehaven baptismal records start in 1842 so likely James was born before 1842.

  • I am certain that you will not find the record of the birth of James Attridge, Captain of the Jennie Johnston in the Castlehaven records as he would have had to be at least 21 years old to be a very young Captain when the Jennie Johnston made her maiden voyage in April of 1848 ( believe, under his command) and Castlehaven records as Roger stated are only as far back as 1842. Sorry for the bad news. Frank Fahy (Abbeystrowry)

  • I have found (on Ancestry.co.uk)  the Master Mariner's certificate for Captain James Attridge, dated January 1851, in which his date of birth is given as 1805; in Castletownsend.

I am interested in exploring possible connection with my own family - my great-great grandfather was Thomas Attridge (b about 1823), a shipwright in Cork, who married Margaret Hegarty.  I suspect but have not yet confirmed that his brother was Patrick Attridge, a mariner of over 30 years, who married Margaret Courrtney and eventually retired to Kinsale, where he died in 1891.  They were very much a sea-faring family, which continued in the next generation.

It is possible that Captain James Attridge was an uncle of my great-great grandfather; and possibly his father.  But at present the more likely possibility is that Thomas' father was Arthur Attridge who married Jane O'Malley, a descendant of the famous 16th century pirate queen of the West Coast of Ireland.  But as yet these are just possibilities ....

  • Hi JC,

As a first attempt. the following link will show you Attridges in the Diocese of Cork & Ross from 1800 - 1880 from www.irishgenealogy.ie in which you might recognise a few family names or possibilities. If I can help you further, please do not hesitate to ask and I will do my best.
