Hi Sue

I live in Drogheda and am not familiar with the place, I have checked the local Old Drogheda Society book The Streets & Lanes of Drogheda and it is not mentioned. However I will ask around locally as I am not actually from here, almost 40 years does not count.

Also if you have any more information on your ancestor, can you indicate what years we are talking about, also religion,  Church of Ireland (Protestant or Anglican) records are online going back to the 1700s but Roman Catholic records are not as good with years missing. 

There are also some history books of the town and I will take a look next week.

Hi Pat,

Thank you for your lovely reply and help.  I know that he was a famous Printer living primarily in Dublin.  He was Church of Ireland.  I found a great deal about Brett from a book on Printers!  And discovered his death in the newspaper.  He died in 1823 in Dublin.  I found a notice that he was applying for an apprentice as early as 1780. I have estimated he was born about 1750.  I found a reference to his cottage in Drogheda but another reference to it being in Meath in a notice regarding his daughter's marriage in the newspaper.  . It seems to have been spelt Doik's cottage too. (should have mentioned that before but I forgot!)

 I know my cousin mentioned she had found a record that stated he was orginally apprenticed to his father Richard Smith in Drogheda.

a few things, Meath may be more correct but Drogheda is in Meath on the south side of the town, boundaries are extended but church is all Meath but St Peters is a Louth parish in Drogheda, the more sea side holiday places are in Laytown and Bettystown in Meath or Clogherhead in Louth but maybe that is just more recently but Drogheda was a more industrialised area.

Also there is a printers museum in Dublin which I have been meaning to visit, see https://www.nationalprintmuseum.ie/ I have no excuse for it as I worked a few hundred metres from it for many years. I see it has a reference library.
