My 2x great grandmother was Margaret Agnes Coughlan, born 24 Jan 1845 in Castlelyons, Cork. I believe her parents were John Coughlan and Ann Roche (their names were spelled Caughn and Roche on the 7 Jul 1833 mariage record I found on RootsIreland). Margaret appears to have come to the USA, possibly New York, around 1851, possibly traveling with her mother. Margaret, her mother, and her sisters Jane, Eliza, and Mary, lived for several years in New Bedford, Massachusetts before moving to California. A sister to Margaret named Bridget was baptized in Jan 1836, but is not shown in the US Censuses, and I suspect she married and stayed in Ireland. I would like to find out if that is true, and what happened to her.
John Coughlan is never mentioned in any US Censuses, so I assume he died in Ireland before 1851. I would like to find out what happened to John, and anything about his life story or ancestry.
I have found a baptismal record for an Ann Roche for 24 Jul 1814 in Castlelyons, with parents named John Roche and Elizabeth Guiry. I would like to know about their families, and to find out if they are my 4x great grandparents.
I live in California and will travel to Cork this June. I would truly appreciate any assistance in finding info about my family's heritage, or places I can go while in Cork to do more research.
Thanks,
Eileen Flinn Burton

Hello again!
Unfortunately, we don't have a parish liaison in that area of Co. Cork. I will check with our HQ becasue I know we are adding more volunteers in Cork.
A couple comments. I did not find a church marriage record on Roots Ireland in Castlelyons so I suspect she did not marry. Possibly she emigrated, died young or was a spinster.
Did you find a townland name in any of the records you found in Castlelyons.
Civil registration started in 1864 for BDMs so if John died before 1851, the only possible record would be one kept by the church and the Castlelyons register does not show death info.
Have you considered autosomal DNA testing?
I checked the 1901 census and there were two Coughlan families in the area around Castlelyons. Possibly there is a connection with your family.

Thanks so much for your response!
I have not found any reference to a townland in any of the records I have found. Really the only records I have been able to locate are the Marriage and Baptismal records in RootsIreland. I appreciate your finding the census records - maybe they are related to my family.
I have done autosomal DNA testing, through Ancestry.com. So far I have not figured out how to see if any of the listed distant relatives are in Ireland. Any tips on how to go about that?
Thanks,

Eileen:
I have tested with Ancestry and Family Tree DNA. The only clue would be an e-mail address ending with an ending of .ie Other than that there is no way to know until they respond to your e-mail contact.
