I'm wondering if anyone can read the attached church register entry, from the Bruff parish register.

I can read most of it, but can't make out the words at the end of the first line.  They are probably in Latin?

Thank you.

  • Helen:

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

    Hopefully, one of our volunteers is a Latin expert. I looked at the whole Bruff register and noticed two things. The baptismal record for Michael O'Donnell is on a page with marriages. Second, there is a line that goes up to a record two or three earlier on the page. Not sure if that means anything.

    I will pass the message to our parish liaison in Bruff.

  • Hi Helen

    Michaelis = Michael

    This is the entry translated out of Latin

    Michael Donnell baptised  22 January 1831, father Michael Donnell, mother Judith Verdon, baptised in Bruff

    Thank you for the replies!

    I guess I should have included the whole page from the register - I'm attaching it here.

    It almost looks as though 2 people were baptised, where it says (translated) "Baptised Michael" and then maybe and Baptised (somebody else - the 2 words I can't read.")

  • Helen B, that looks like two children baptized to me, too, but I can't read the second name.  The first letter may be "W" when I compare it to other records.  You might want to try posting this on the Facebook page "Random Acts Of Genealogical Kindness RAOGK - UK(England, Ireland, Scotland) to get other opinions on it.  I've found that really helpful in deciphering records.  Also, try sites like:  http://www.from-ireland.net/irish-names/latin-names-in-english         http://www.irish-genealogy-toolkit.com/latin-irish-parish-registers.html

  • Helen B, I'd like to offer my ideas on the parish register entries.

    Firstly, I dont think you need to worry about the lines going up. I think this is actually a circle about the two previous entries which are anotated above the circle with a latin version of 'parish of Dromin' indicating that these two families are not from Bruff but the neighboruing parish of Dromin.

    Secondly, your entry is for the baptism of  Michael and Maurice/Morris [Mauritio] - then [something] sons of Michael O'Donnell and Judith Verdon.  If I had to take a guess, I'd say these sons weren't twins [geminii or gemellus] and the 'something' starts with an A so possibly Adultus.  Again, this is just a guess but might help with the second name at least.

    Cheers, Jenny [Brisbane Australia]

  • Thanks, Jenny.  I'll have to see if I can find any other record of a Maurice/Morris.  I do have other records that say Michael was born in 1830, but nothing on a Maurice.
