Hi,

Is anyone aware of or have connections to a William McIlwain from Ballymartin? Griffith's valuation says there was one from here (townland of Toberagnee). He was my Great, Great Great-Grandfather (1827-1914), married to Brigit Fitzgibbon (1837-1909).

Thanks, and slainte!

  • Brendan,

The Valuation Revision records for Toberagnee show William as having vacated the property in Toberagnee in 1869. It was a labourer's cottage on James Fleming's farmland.

  • Thanks a lot Elwyn.

Also, a possible earlier ancestor of William McIlwain, an older "William McIlwaine," though this appears to be a little ways (80 miles) from Ballymartin:

Index :    Pre-1858 Wills and Admons
Sub-Index :    Armagh Diocesan Administration Bonds
    Surname :    McIlwaine
    Forename :    William
    Occupation :    Farmer
    Town or Townland :    Ballymulligan
    Parish :
    County :
    Notes :
    Description :
    PRONI Ref :
    Date :    1780

Found it by searching his name here: http://apps.proni.gov.uk/DCAL_PRONI_ProniNames_IE/SearchPage.aspx

  • McIlwaine is a pretty common name. I'd be surprised if they were connected.
