I'm a descendant of Michael Halpin, son of Michael Halpin and Mary Britt
Michael Jr. had three siblings that I know of:  James, Henry and Bridget.

He posted the following advertisement in The Irish Canadian newspaper in March 1883:

Information Wanted

Of JAMES HALPIN, who  left Ireland about
46 years ago.  He came to Canada, a soldier,
from the Parish of Askeaton, County Limerick.
Also of Henry Halpin, who left Ireland about 4?
years ago.  He came to America.  Also of Bridget
Halpin, who came to America about 39 or 40 years
ago.  Any information of them will be thankfully
received by their youngest brother, Michael Halpin,
673 Cooper Street, Ottawa, Canada.

Michael would have been about 53 years old at this time.

"46 years ago" in 1883 would have been about 1837.

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

The Askeaton RC church records start in 1829  http://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0860   and it appears that Michael and his siblings were baptized before records are available because I checked Roots Ireland for any Halpin baptismal records in Askeaton or any other parish with a father named Michael and mother with surname Britt and no records were located.

I also checked the 1827 Tithe records for Askeaton parish. There were over 300 records but no Halpin records. I also looked at the 1850 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing and there were no Halpins in Askeaton. All of the Halpins listed were a good deal to the east of Askeaton in Caheravally, Caherelly, Donaghmore and Cahernarry parishes.

Have you considered autosomal DNA testing?

    Hi Roger,

Thanks for checking and getting back to me so quickly. This is my first Irish ancestor for whom I've even found a parish.  I'll keep looking.

I've thought about DNA testing, but haven't decided just yet.
