I live in Massachusetts and my greatgrandfather immigrated here in 1849.  His US Naturalization record states that he was born in Ballyarthur 29 September 1827.  His name is Michael C. Barrett and his parents were John and Anna.  I cannot find any Baptism record with these names.

There are three Ballyarthur townlands in Ireland. One in Castlemacadam parish in Co. Wicklow and the other two are in Co. Cork (Fermoy and Marshalltown parishes). Do you know which Ballyarthur? I did not find his baptismal record on Roots Ireland. The Fermoy RC records start in 1828 so if he was from Fermoy, the record would not be available.

I think the townland you want is Kilbarraree.

I found a Geary family in Kilbarraree in 1911

Thank you so much, Roger.  I know it's County Cork, but not which parish.  If it was Fermoy, do you think possibly Michael Barrett would have been Baptized in early 1848 since he was born 29 September?  Also, do records still exist for the Marshalltown parish?  Michael Barrett fought in the US Civil War and was injured by a musket ball in his hip.  I'm attaching a photo of him in his Civil War uniform.

Children were baptized soon after birth. The family would not have waited three months. The RC parish for Marshalltown is Mitchelstown and baptismal records go back to 1792 with a gap between 1801-1814  http://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0081

The Mitchelstown records would have been available when I made my query.

Hi Roger Many thanks for your information about Maurice Geary from Kilbarraree. That is indeed the family farm that I remember passing with my grandmother and she told me about her family there. I can recollect a lady called Kitty who lived up the road from my Grandmothers cousin Mary -Eliza Aherne. Mary also had relations next door called Brian and I think his wife was called Pat. They lived practically opposite the statue of Christy Ring. Brian caught us some lovely fish I remember and I am sure their daughter worked in the whisky distillery . She got my Mum and Nan in half price and treated them to a good taster.
