Eccles family genealogy

ECCLES family - I'm looking for anyone who may have info on Eccles family genealogy beginning with Charles Edward Eccles (circa 1715-1781). Charles was born in Northern Ireland and had three sons before emigrating to Pennsylvania circa 1748. His sons were William George Eccles who was born circa 1740 in N. Ireland (in County Down?), Arthur Richard Eccles who was born in 1742 (in County Down?) and Nathaniel Eccles who was born in early Oct 1744 in the Belfast area. Charles reportedly married firstly Mary Louise Tether/Teeter (1723-1748) and later Mary Gilkinson (1715-1760).

Charles Eccles' parents were said to have been William Chichester Eccles (1685-1742), who was born in the townland (family estate) of Shannock (near Magheraveely), County Fermanagh and Hannah Hulme/Hume (1692-x). William Chichester Eccles' parents were said to have been Daniel Eccles (1645-1687) who was also born in the townland of Shannock, County Fermanagh and Sarah Moore (1643-x). Daniel Eccles was said to have owned property in both County Fermanagh and County Tyrone. Daniel Eccles' parents were Sir Gilbert Eccles (1602-1694) born at the family estate of Kildonan (near Pinwherry) south Ayrshire, Scotland and Elizabeth Ker born circa 1620 in Trearne, Scotland. Elizabeth Ker was said to be Gilbert Eccles' third wife (the first being Ann Cockburn, the second Bessie Schort/Short). The Eccles family would have been of the Church of Ireland or Presbyterian denomination.

I'm looking for any recorded/verified citations from public records, church records, other primary sources, books, etc.

  • Steven,

You say the family lived in Shannock, Fermanagh. The townland of Shannock is in the parish of Clones. There are no early Presbyterian records for that parish (the earliest start in 1819) but the Church of Ireland records start in 1682, so you might find some evidence of the family being baptised, married and buried there. There’s a copy of those records in PRONI (the public record office) in Belfast.

PRONI has about 30 sets of records on this Eccles family. Have you studied them? For example, there’s a fond T962 which is described as Estate and testamentary papers for Eccles of Shannock 1671 – 1856. D526/1/1 is dated 30.5.1671 and was the release of 2000 acres relating to the Eccles family of Shannock. And so on. Another is T962/16 dated 17rh Feb 1743:

“Daniel Eccles, Fintonagh, Co. Tyrone. to Robert Lowry, Maberry, Galbraith Lowry, Aghenis, & James Lowry, Cooly, all Co. Tyrone.

Copy Deed of Settlement on Daniel Eccles, his wife and young children. Manor of Shannock, Co. Fermanagh”.

Probably well worth searching the Registry of Deeds records for the family too. You may find marriage settlements, leases etc. They are on-line on Familysearch, or you can search the originals in Dublin and a duplicate set on microfilm in PRONI. They start in 1709.
