My grandmother was Mary Josephine Collins originally of St. John's. Her father was Patrick Francis Collins originally of Harbour Grace. His father was Captain Michael Collins of Victoria Street, Harbour Grace. His father was Patrick Collins who married Johanna Ahern on 14 September 1828 at Killeagh in the County of Cork.

Seeking any further leads on Collins and Ahern in this parish if there are any to be had.

  • Hi looking at the Witnesses to the marriage in Tithe records a James Flanagan lived in Drishane More and a John Keniry lived in Ballycurryiginny which would be across the rd from Flanagan . You also had a John keniry in Bakersclose at other side of Drishane More. The nearest Collins to above a Ml.  lived in  Mullarie or Melare in record. This Townland is adjacent to both . Looking  at the Ahern you had 3 families in Ballykilty this Townland being adjacent to Mullarie. It was usual then for close neighbours to marry. . If. the Captain Michael Collins was first born son of Patrick married 1828 it may be a lead to the Ml Collins in Melara Tithe. Have you any other Christian names for the children of Ptk Collins and Johanna Ahern ?

  • Hi Will, thanks very much for your extremely informative reply. I have found with my other ancestors they did indeed marry a near neighbour, for example my great-grandfather's great-grandfather was Francis Conry and he held two farms at Runnacocka and Lisaphilip West in the Parish of Kilmacumsy, while his wife was a Brigid Dempsey, and his neighbour with a farm on each townland was John Dempsey, evidently likely her father or brother. Francis's father John's farm was at Runabull in the same Parish, and no Conrys are found there in the 1824 Tithe Applotments, so he apparently moved within the parish to border the Dempsey farm.

Anyway I do not know the Christian name of the eldest brother born in 1835, but the second born was James, born in 1837, the third Margaret, born in 1838, all in Ireland, Captain Michael William Collins July 1842 in Harbour Grace, Newfoundland. I am not yet very familiar with County Cork, but will certainly be making a stop there and Ballyrea near Oulart in the County of Wexford, where I traced my O'Gradys to next time I am in Ireland, I've spent my trips there in the north.

  • Hi I found the first born child to Ptk Collins and Mary Ahern? James on 28Aug 1829 sponsors Johanna Ahern and John Shea. Id say they mixed up Johanna and Mary in original entry.  You have a James born in 1837 so its possible the first James died.  Where did you get the birth records for your James born 1837 and Mgt. 1838 , do you have  month and sponsors names .? was hoping sponsors names to the children might give further clues .

  • So far as I know the only source for any of the siblings is an old family tree of my grandmother's side, which I believe she wrote. On my Dad's tree on ancestry.com it has John Joseph Collins born 1770 and Margaret Sullivan as Patrick Collins' parents, but I'm not even sure where that information came from. There was a bit of reuse of names in her family, she was Mary Josephine Collins, her elder sister Josephine Mary Collins.

  • Hi do you have any other male names in the First and second generation born in U.S. They may contain a clue. Records for births only start in Killeagh from 1829 and James born Aug 1829 is the only child recorded in killeagh parish . Our only other records to compare are Tithe 1830 and Griffith valuation 1850 where the male leaseholder is recorded.

  • , Death records for James Collins of Harbour Grace, Newfoundland indicate he died March 9, 1918 at 92 years. His place of birth was shown as Ireland. Accordingly his birth year would beabout  1826. Of course we are not sure of the accuracy of his age as written down in the record

  • Hey Gerry, usually in my experience I have found census/death ages to almost always be within two years of their real age. Thanks for that correction. Happy New Years cousin !
