Hello,
My g g grandfather was James McDevitt, born in Raphoe in 1838 and died in Australia in 1894.
His father was James McDevitt born 1797, died 1843 in Donegal
His mother was Margaret Grey Porter, born 1809 in Donegal and died in Australia in 1890 (she left Ireland with her children after her husband died and remarried here)
James McDevitt and Margaret were married in 1822.
I have been able to find little else about them but am visiting Raphoe in a couple of months and would like to visit the general area where they lived etc. Just wondering if anyone would have any more specific information about them or point me in the right direction.
regards and thanks

If it's any help, www.rootsireland.ie/ (subscription site) has 38 McDevitt & surname variants burial records for Raphoe Civil Parish, but they don't start till 1865
No luck in the early Irish Censuses but the Tithe Applotments (free at titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/) have 30 McDevitts in Donegal 1827-34 but Raphoe isn't mentioned.
Griffiths Valuation (free at www.askaboutireland.ie/) has 2 McDevitts in Raphoe in 1858

Thank you for that, Col. One thing that this info does reveal is the there were a lot of McDevitts around in that part of the country (refer the Roots Ireland information)
One thing you have pointed out here is that there are 'early Irish Censuses' which I did not realise there were. I will have a look at those for this and other research.
thanks again.
cheers

Hello, I have recently done a DNA test and the results have been returned. Not too sure how I look up my McDevitt associated relatives, but will give it a go.
thanks

Hello,
I am descendant of Jane McDevitt, the sister of James and Margaret. I have been able to trace both Margaret and James's parents in Donegal. James was the son of Patrick McDavitt and Nora Brown. Margaret was the daughter of Willliam Porter and Mary Forsayth.
I have had my DNA tested through 23andme. I have uploaded my results to Gematch, FTDNA and Myheritage.
I would be very interested in sharing any information.
Regards

I descend from Dominick McDevitt, born abt 1814 in County Donegal. He migrated to New Brunswick then to Nova Scotia. Two kd my brothers and I have been tested through Ancestry and are on Gedmatch.
