I'm looking for information on my great, great grandparents, James and Elizabeth Stewart, from Kilmacrenan. A daughter of theirs, Catherine Elizabeth ( born 28th Feb, 1845 and baptised in the Presbyterian church on 2nd March 1845 ) married William Rankin from Letterkenny in 1873. Were there any other members of the Stewart family and where are James and Elizabeth buried.

6 Stewart households in Gortnaskeagh in the 1901 census, all farmers, and all Presbyterian.

I’d be inclined to search the local Presbyterian and Church of Ireland graveyards in the Kimacrennan area for their graves. If your family were farmers they are more likely to have a gravestone. (The majority of the population couldn’t afford one but farmers usually could). Presbyterians generally don’t keep burial records so a gravestone or possibly a funeral notice in the local paper may be the only way of knowing where they were buried.

If you haven't already observed, I note a James Stewart in Griffiths Valuation for Tawny Upper (aka Tawnyards / Tawny Ards) with three other Stewart families, Samuel, William and David Stewart. David was renting/leasing properties from William. There is also a George Stewart noted in Tawny Lower, down hill from Tawny Upper and much closer to Kilmacrenan. Gortnaskeagh is close to the SW corner of Tawny Upper.
In Gornaskeagh, I'm noting the following Stewart families; John (1), Peter (1), Catherine, John (2), George, Peter (2). Peter (1) is leasing / renting land from John.
Good luck on your search.

I was in Kilmacrenan in May and specifically stopped at Gortnaskeagh as that is where my Diver family is from. We met a Diver family who still live in the location.
We also went to the church in Kilmacrenan, St. Finian and St. Marks Church. In the cemetery was this person's grandparents - Alexander Diver and Eliza Jane Stewart (although it says Diver on the headstone). Maybe this is the same family you are seeking?

Col, Elwyn, Lee and treesrch,
Thanks for all this and apologies for late response but have been out of internet connection abroad.
Lots of information for me to investigate so I'll be back in due course. I visit Letterkenny and Kilmacrenan quite often, so I'll visit ( and revisit) some graveyards.
Many thanks again, much appreciated
