James Shaughnessy whose father was also called James Shaughnessy, could have been known as Jas Shaughnessy.

connection to the area, see attached.

Trying to find out if he (James) or (Jas) his father is the James Shaughnessy of the Clongorey Evictions.

One would be my great great grandfather (James)

The other would be my great great great grandfather (Jas)

My great great grandfather, James (son of Jas Shaughnessy) married Alicia Power, daughter of William Power in 1865.  They had 3 childern, Bridget, Patrick and Catherine.

I saw the book Mary Ryan wrote on the Evictions, she mentioned a Patrick Shaughnessy received a loan to purchase back land, is this Patrick son of James Shaughnessy?  did he purchase the land?

Had his father died before he got the loan to purchase the land and then he didn't bother, because James Shaughnessy doesn't appear on the 1901 census, and Patrick, his mother (Alicia/Alice) and sister Catherine were in Dublin on the 1901 census.  We know Patrick wasn't into farming, he worked on the railway as a porter and then a guard.

I think it could be James, Patricks father, i just need a proper confirmation before i add it to the family tree.

If there is an old map of the area you could pin point where they lived.

Also looking for the finally resting places of, James Shaughnessy, Alicia/Alice and i suspect a Bridget Shaughnessy.

Thank you in advance for any help given.

  • Dear Scarlett0007:

Many thanks for your post to the Ireland Reaching Out message board and welcome to the site!

You might try looking for Civil records for the Shaughnessy family through the Irish Genealogy website.

    https://www.irishgenealogy.ie/en/

Civil Registration began in 1864 and from your post, it would appear that the marriage of James Shaughnessy and his children's births would most likely be recorded there.

In addition, newspaper research into the local area might be very helpful to you--particularly as the Evictions were written about and there would have been articles written about them.  The Irish News Archives which is a subscription site is useful as is the British Newspaper Archives.  Both contain a large number of digitised newspapers.

It would be great if you would create a profile for any member of the Shaughnessy family for the XO Chronicles database.  This database is used by many of our members with regard to their own research.  It is possible that there are others who are also researching the same family or may have further information about the Clongorey Evictions.

If you need further assistance, please let me know.

    Kind regards,

    Jane.

  • Hi Jane,

There isn't many certificates online for the Shaughnessy/O Shaughnessy family from Barrettstown, Newbridge.

I just found birth certificates available online for the childern of James and Alicia/Alice, Patrick, Catherine and Bridget.

Many of them don't have an available image online, i got most of them from the GRO.

It is very strange that not a lot of information is coming up when i search for this family in any of family research places online, maybe i'm not using the right tags in my search, i don't know.  Is there any other way to search for this family?

So because i can't really find anything about them online, i wouldn't really have any URLs to put in the database.  But i can put up what i do have, if that would be alright.

Is there anywhere else that would have some information on this family?  It seems that nobody knows who they are, even from the area they lived in, Barrettstown, Newbridge, Co Kildare.

Alicia Power's father William was a farmer, surely there would be some kind of information about him at least?  Did Alicia have brother's and sister's?  Who was William married to?  Where was his farm?

Patrick worked for the Railway, there has to be something more available about him?  He had to have been employed at Heuston Station, because he was living in Dublin by the time of the 1901 census.

I think i may have Patrick's grandfather's death certificate, i have his mother's death certificate, again all from the GRO.

I love to have somebody go through some of the certificates i do have, i can't make out all the wording?  But i won't be posting them up here.
