Hi
My grandfather came over to England in 1900 from Ireland. He was born in Coolatinny 1875 and baptised James Carty in Kitullagh, although he changed his name to McCarthy. On 1901 census he put down his parish as Ballinlough but the 1911 census was Kiltullagh. My cousin believes he was born in Coolatinny which would fit in with this and that his father's name was James.
I have found his exact birth date in the Kiltullagh parish record set 18 April 1875.
His father was James being born 1841 and mother Ann Flynn. Thomas is the next ancestor and I think married to Brid Waldron.
Is there anyone out there that can confirm the places and if Coolatinny is close to Ballinlough and also if there are any more Cartys in the same area. I live in Dorset so am not au fait with the area.
Thanks for your help

Kiltullagh is the name of a Catholic (and Civil) parish, and this includes both the town of Ballinlough, Co. Roscommon and the townland of Coolatinny which is located to the west of and less than 3km (~ 2 miles) from Ballinlough - see Ballinlough to Coolatinny on Google map , and the townland of Coolatinny on the historic OSI map
Griffith's Valuation, which is dated 1857 for this area, show properties for a Thomas and Patrick Flynn at Coolatinny, but no [Mc]Carthy/Carty, the 1901 census shows one Flynn one Carty and a household listed as 'Corty'. However this census form was filled in by an enumerator - neither the head of the household James or his wife Anne could read.

Mo:
Shane answered all of your questions. Here are a few more pieces of info in case you don't have them. James and Anne were married in 1870. See transcription of the civil record from Roots Ireland which indicates that the father's of the bride and groom were both deceased.
James also had at least five siblings: Patrick 1871 John 1873 Margaret 1877 Thomas 1880 Elizabeth 1884
Please consider adding your ancestor stories to our XO Chronicles site https://www.irelandxo.com/ireland-xo/history-and-genealogy/ancestor-dat…

Thanks Shane and Roger for replying to my post.
It seems much clearer now that I can tie in the places. Yes, Shane they are listed on the 1911 census as Corty but they are the same family. I have James Carty and Anne Flynn being the parents on the baptismal record and james and Annes marriage record on Parish register but you have filled in a lot more detail Roger which I can now research further. However on FMP Kiltullagh parish register Annes parents are William Flynn and Mary Grogan. Somehow I have James senior's father as thomas, but with a bit more research I should fathom it out. Must join Roots Ireland but at the moment rely on Ancestry and FMP and they dont have as much information. I didn't realise that they came from Ballinlough mountain and the parents were deceased.
Have pulled off the 1911 census for Coolatinny and there is another Carty besides my Cartys/Cortys, her name is Hanoria Carty. (Lovely name) and wonder if she could be related. More food for thought.
Thanks once again for your help.

Image from parish registers re James senior baptism - cloonerview??. Not sure now which is correct. Roger's Patrick Carty or Thomas Carty as the father of James Senior.
Does anyone know of a naming pattern in that district? That could be worth researching.

Mo:
The townland on the register is Clooncrim which is also in Kiltullagh civil parish.
The RC records for Kiltullagh start in September 1839 so it is possible that Jmes was baptized before September 1839.
No idea of the naming pattern in the area other than the traditional pattern (if followed by the family).

Hi Graham and Merry Christmas,
My James Carty (McCarty)was my grandfather born 1875 who came over to England in 1899. His marriage cert states that his father was James, a farmer, although no irish connection on that cert. Through word of mouthh, mum and aunts they all said that he was from Roscommon. On the later censuses 1911 he states his birthplace as Kiltullagh. Through a bit of research we have found his father and family to come from Coolatinny. We have found a James Carty living in Cheshire as a servant on a farm in 1901 census with a place of birth Ballinlough, not too sure about this one. So far haven't found a Patrick in the family tree, but you never know. There are an awful lot of cartys out there,,,

This has to be the latest reply ever! I believe the James Carty listed as being on a farm in Chesire to be my grandad. I sure when I was young he told me this, despite the year being slightly out for him coming to England! Email me please No,auto.care@btinternet.com kind regards Graham Carty.

Hi Mo, theres a good possibility that we are related.
My grandmother was Elizabeth Carty from Coolatinny. Her father was James and Mother was Ann (Annie).
Going by other information on your post it definitely sounds like the same family. My Grannys brothers were James, John, Pat and Thomas. Her sister Margaret died of a heart attack at a young age. She had a heart condition that they didnt know about.
Granny met her husband in Ballinlough, he was a journeyman Tailor from Dublin. They lived in the gate house of the big house or Rector in Ballinlough where my mother and her siblings were born, the shell of the house still exsists. They moved to Dublin in 1924.
I hope you get this post now as I can see its been a while since your original post.
