G'day to all,

I am looking for more information on Sarah Walsh my GG Grandmother born in Dublin City around 1818. Sarah was sentenced to 7 years and transported to Australia in 1837 on the ship "Sir Charles Forbes". Sarah's parents were Anne King and James Walsh. Sarah married William Garlick in 1840 and lived quite a good life in Penrith NSW. After William's death in 1866 Sarah moved to Orange NSW where many of her relatives lived. I believe she had a dress making business with her daughters. Sarah died 1899 Orange NSW.

I can't find any further information in Ireland regarding Sarah's parents or siblings. Any information would be a great help to me. I was told that James Walsh was a coachman but not sure on that point.   I have downloaded a copy of a photo given to me by a relative, it is James Walsh/Welsh and Anne King.  Maybe I should try for a death certificate for James or Anne in Ireland.

Kind regards

Cheryl

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

I searched for Sarah Walsh'  baptismal record on two different data bases and could not find the record. I extended the search to all of Ireland.

Civil registration of deaths started in 1864 and we don't know when James and Anne died. The other complication is that the surname Walsh is very common.

That is a great picture of James and Anne. We have an XO Chronicles site where you can add stories of ancestors who left Ireland. Maybe you can add Sarah's story. https://www.irelandxo.com/ireland-xo/history-and-genealogy/ancestor-dat…

I will share your message with someone who is very knowledgable about Dublin.

  • I also had a look for any details - no sign of a probable baptism for Sarah, which is not that unsual.  There's good coverage of most of the Dublin City Catholic and Church of Ireland parishes on the free IrishGenealogy website and also Images of the Catholic records on the NLI website. It's quite common to see cases where baptism records for one or more children to a couple cannot be located - the priest may have fogotten to note the details in the register, apparently in busy parishes they kept their own notes with the intention to add to the main register later, the page the details were entered on may have faded been damaged, or the parish may not have been keeping good records at the time.

I did locate a marriage for James Walsh and Anne King in 1811 in St. Mary's RC which fits the timeline, and several possible children to the couple baptised in the same parish e.g.  Anne 1816  Mary Anne 1825  Anne 1825 Christopher 1826... unfortunately the registers for St. Mary's during this timeframe often do not include mother's maiden name, so there's no way to be certain which, if any, of these are siblings to your Sarah.  The last of the baptisms I mentioned is the most promising as one of the godparents (sponsors) is a "Bartel" (Bartholomew) King.. so could be related to Anne.

The Pro-Cathedral, which is the main church for the parish started construction just a few years after James and Anne married, before that time buildings in several locations were used, including a previous parish church on Liffey street.

James and Sarah look reasonably well off in the photo you've added and the database I have on Photographers and places the business at that address (140 Stephen's green West) in the early 1880s - so there should be civil death certs available for them. The images of civil death records on IrishGenealogy only cover from the 1890s at the moment, but earlier records will be added in time. As Roger mentioned Walsh is a common surname (4th most common surname in the 1890s) so there would be quite a few James and Anne's to check, but maybe one might show up with an occupation of Coachman... given that they seem to be Catholic they would most likely have been buried in Prospect/Glasnevin cemetery which has very good records, and full details of a family plot could give you useful details. I would suggest trying to locate a death cert first in civil records to narrow down the date, while the basic search on the Glasnevin website is free, you need to buy credits to see the full details.

  • Thank you so much for all your help in my search for Parents and children of Anne King and James Walsh, parents of my GG Grandmother Sarah Walsh.  It is amazing that both Anne and James were alive in the 1880's as their marriage took place in 1811. I will look for death certificates around that time if I can. I know I will find something eventually and so grateful to you both for your amazing replies.  The hardships during the 1800's both here in Australia, Ireland and around the world made for difficult lives for most. We here in Australia have a land of sunshine thanks to our ancestors.

    Kind regards

  • Well, it is now May 2023. Since my last post and all your wonderful replies, I have found that the photo of Anne and James Walsh is I believe mother and son. I have also found that Bartholomew King, Anne's brother came to Australia 1829 as a convict on board "The Guildford". Barty's wife Anne Cullen was on board with their son. I also have a copy from the newspaper in Dublin regarding the conviction of Mary Anne Downey (Alias Bridget) and Sarah Walsh having stolen boots and given 7 years. I feel I have a connection to Mary Anne Downey also. My DNA matches with a Downey but still no proof. I wonder is Sarah Walsh gave her real name although the Porters at a Hotel in Dublin said they knew the girls but the article 1836 didn't give their names. A work in progress. Kind regards and thank you. Cher PS Anne Walsh nee King lived a ripe old age of 92

and died, according to records, 1880.
