Hello,

My 2x gr. grandmother,  Bridget McCabe, was born  abt 1847 in or near Shercock, County Cavan.  She migrated, at age 18 in  1865 to NSW, Australia on the ship, "Hornet."

Her parents were Patrick McCabe and Mary O'Reilly.  Her father was still living in 1865 but her mother was deceased (according to immigration record).

Her four children were named:  Wnyford, Mary Jane, John and Annie Francis who were all born in Queensland.

Trying to find further information on Bridget and her family from Shercock.

Thank you,

Lindsey

  • Dear Lindsay,

Sorry for not answering sooner,  but I have been renovating my home, replastering ceilings/walls etc and I had to move into half of the house, so I was not concentrating on the messages.

Did she travel alone?  Will you look at the immigration records and see was there anyone else from Shercock travelling with her, if so they most likely would be neighbours or relatives.

I have a looked at Roots Ireland, (Church records) and I cannot find your Bridget among them, possible due to lost Registers for that period.  If I guess that her father was born circa 1817, I have looked for his death from 1865 to 1917 on irishgenealogy.ie  Not all death records indexed have their images available yet and it may be worth applying for the following death certificates to find out if any of them are your ancestor, the main reason for this would be to try and find out the townland around Shercock that they came from:

Death of PATRICK MCCABE in 1871

Group Registration IDN/RSR District/Reg Area BailieboroughDeceased Age at Death 82 Returns Year 1877 Returns Quarter 2 Returns Volume No7 Returns Page No 323

Go to their website and they will direct you to purchasing copies of the certificates as follows:

1.If you would like to request a photocopy of the Birth/Marriage/Civil Partnership/Death entry (for genealogy and research purposes),

    1. A photocopy of an entry in any register can be purchased from the General Register Office by downloading the form here and submitting it by fax or post as outlined on the form, or
    2. The General Register Office also operates a research facility at Werburgh Street, Dublin 2 where members of the public may search the indexes to the registers held by General Register Office and purchase photocopies of entries in the registers. See Research page

    Best Wishes Carmel

  • Hi Patricia,

I don't believe my Mary O'Reilly travelled to Australia.  She was listed as deceased when her daughter, Bridget McCabe, travelled to NSW in 1865.

Thank you for your info and interest.
