Looking for Tithe Records of the Whelan family in Duncormick/Rathangan.  In Griffiths in 1853 the John Whelan family was in Duncormick. I can find no Duncormick Tithe Records at all.  Was Duncormick/Rathangan know by a different name in the years of the Tithe Records? I don't know John's father's name and I assume it would be his father in the Tithe Records in the 1820s/1830s.  (John married in 1828 in Duncormick/Rathangan).  Can anyone help me?

Thank you in advance.

  • The Church of Ireland parish of Duncormick was united with the Parish of Ambrosetown (Lewis 1837 entry for parish of Duncormick), and that's the way it's listed on the Tithe records. The introduction pages make a note of this see pages 638 639 642 etc. There are 20 townlands mentioned but no sign of Rathangan - only certain types of agricultural land and usage were eligible for Tithe payments, so the tax may not have been applicable to any properties Rathangan townland - see listing for Ambrosetown (& Duncormick) parish. There's no sign that I can see of any Whelan entries for the parish.

  • Thank you so much ! That answers alot of questions. But may I ask you a question in order to be sure I understand this?  Nobody in Duncormick, then, was taxed by the Tithes because their land was not suitable?  Does that mean the land was poor ?  Thank you for your time.  Barbara  :-)

  • Tithes were only applicable to agricultural land, and only covered eligible properties of over one acre, and did not cover towns and villages, small houses and labourers cottages etc. Certain types of land usage were excluded, but the rules were not the same in all areas, in addition some locations were Tithe-free. I checked the list of townlands included under Ambrosetown on the Tithes and it doens seem to include any from Duncormick civil parish.. and no sign that I found of any of these under other nearby parishes (some parish boundaries changed by the time of the OS mapping and Griffiths).

I see a John Whelan in the parish on Griffith's valuation - is he one of your Whelans ?
His property seems to be in the town and at that time is described as 'House & small garden'

Edit to add : the Lewis entry for Ambrosetown shows that Tithe's amount to just over £138 for the parish, which is close to the amount shown on the summary of the Tithe records - see page 655, the Lewis entry for Duncormick/Duncormuck shows the amount for that parish as just over £300 ... so the there appears to be shortfall...

  • Yes, that is my John Whelan in Griffith's (1853) in Duncormick, which is why I was surprised that I couldn't find him twenty years earlier in the Tithes.  But I guess, as you say, if he didn't have any agricultural land, then that explain it. Thank you for your time. Barbara
