Hello everyone ... my 4th great-grandfather, Henry McManus (1767-1832) was buried in St. Paul's COI churchyard, as was his son William (1791-1827). They both died in Virginia (the town in County Cavan, not the state in the US!) so the fact that they were buried in Ballymachugh suggests that the family was part of the McManus group living there. Henry was a shopkeeper on Main Street in Virginia. I cannot find this graveyard on FindAGrave. Does it still exist? Has anyone documented the graves there?

Thank you --

Am attaching a Google Maps photo of the house on Main Street where the McManus store and residence was. :)

  • The graveyard still exists - it's visible on Google Street view next to St. Paul's CofI, and at least some of the headstones are still standing. The Church and Graveyard are located within the townland of Lavagh - see c1890 OSI Map, the earlier c1840s OSI map shows a church at the same location, but no sign of the graveyard at that time - at least not marked on the map.

Baptism, Marriage & Death/Burial records for the parish go back to abt 1816, and remain in local custody.
Most of the headstones (96% by their count) seem to have been transcribed by Find a Grave - see Ballymachugh Parish Church Cemetery Memorials

  • Thank you! I did see that graveyard on FindAGrave, but the photo captions say it is St. Mary's Roman Catholic and I need to find St Paul's COI. I will check the Google maps link you gave me. Very kind of you.

  • didn't spot that, the main caption might be a litttle unclear - the church on FindaGrave is different to the one on Google Street view - the Catholic Church is in nearby Ballynarry townland, and the RC parish was more usually referred to as "Drumlumman South & Ballymachugh" rather than just Ballymachugh. Might be worth checking FindaGrave for any future updates for the Church of Ireland graveyard.

There is some coverage of Ballymachugh CofI parish on RootsIreland (pay-website), but just baptisms at present, so also worth keeping an eye there for updates of any marriages or death/burials. They also list transcripts for a parish listed as "Ballymachugh/Ardagh" that might be worth checking out..these include marriages and death/burials. (The Ardagh possibly refers to the Diocese) The latest parish records list notes "Some coverage at RootsIreland.ie", so these might not be complete.

  • Thank you! If the CofI graveyard is not yet on FindAGrave, I'll "create" it. :)

There is really no substitute for local knowledge. Thank you for enlightening me.

  • It's also worth keeping an eye on Ireland Genealogy Projects (IGP) for any updates to thier Co. Cavan headstone transcripts, and sites like interment.net  I dont live close to Co. Cavan but if I'm ever passing I'll try to drop in and have a look for any McManus headstones.

  • Thank you shanew147. I received this kind message from a volunteer at FindAGrave: "I have a book here that lists all the inscriptions of headstones in that graveyard and unfortunately theirs is not in it. On the register of deaths for that Church it states that William McManus resident of Lurgan Co Cavan was buried 12 May 1827. And Henry, resident of Lurgan was buried 28 March 1832. There are also several other McManus listed including a Mary from Lurgan." -- so it seems likely that if the stones are still standing, they are illegible by now. :(

  • By the way, I entered my 4th g-grandfather Henry McManus in the "chronicles" last week and he still is not showing up. Tried to find a message board for Lurgan parish and couldn't find one. Is there one? Am I doing something wrong? Thank you.
