Hello,
I'm looking for a possible birth place of Garrett Barry DOB abt. 1835, he married Catherine Toner location unknown, date before 1857 when they produced my gt grand father whilst living in Drogheda, Co Louth. later moving on to Belfast. Another son Patrick abt. 1862 moved to Dublin and produced a large family with living relatives some of whom still reside in Dublin, others moved to England, Bolton, Lancashire, and the South West - Gloucestershire.
We have a very distintive DNA signature and apart from a Third Couson from Bolton, we have only one other Theo Barry who has been able to trace his line to the coastal area of Co Cork a John Barry 1750's which leads me to think that we do have roots in Munster or even Co Cork. The DNA signature also tell me that we are not related to the Odo deBarri the Anglo Norman Knight prominent family who gained lands in Co Cork, but there's always a chance we could be related by marriage.
I'd be interested to hear from any person who has a Garrett Barry or Berry DOB abt, 1835 plus or minus, as the name is commonly interchanged who might have parents John Barry & Mary O'Sullivan who were farmers. Garrett was reported to have cliamed he was from Tipperary whilst being arrested in Belfast for drunk & Disordrely, but I've not been and to make any connection in that county.
I'm also Co admin at the FTDNA Barry surname project and Z253 SNP
I look forward to any connections thank you Mike Barry

Hello and Thank you for your efforts.
I've been looking quite a while for the missing information and location, and have now taken extensive DNA tests to help make a link to other who are biological family. There are two problems so far, my Y DNA signature is very rare so only one other found so far, and the lack of other parental side autosomal signatures, as only two of the known four possible lines of desecndant males from Garrett have survived until the present, but at least by tracing a third cousin on the other line and comparing Y DNA then I have now 100% confidence that the research so far is accurate. The problem is that although I have records from Drogheda, and Belfast and Dublin none of these are from the most likely area i.e. Munster and / or Co Cork, the family were street traders and very mobile, I suspect that as Drogheda was a cloth manufacturing area, Garrett went there on the newly installed railway long enough to meet his wife who may have moved south for employement, they then moved to Belfast by 1864 and lived virtually next door to the Smithfield market where I assume they had a stall, Catherine died at another address also very close to the market, in central Belfast. The information for parents of Garrett, comes from a death certificate I have from Edinburgh, as he seems to have taken the family to first Glasgow, the later Edinburgh. The two sons born in Belfast joined the Army in Scotland, and gave the next of kin details. Strangley there was another son James who registered the death that I have never been able to trace, presumably he would have had to have been at least 16 years old to make a death registration which means he was probably also born in Belfast, he had a seperate addrees in Edinburgh in 1886, and there is no entries in the 1881 or 1891 Scottish census or 1901 for that matter of an Irish born James Barry / Berry, so one day there may be a further line of Barry's come to light! The John Barry and Mary O sullivan were listed on the Edinburgh death certificate as farmers, but no location, neither have I been able to find a burial place in Edinburgh for Garrett. The two sons, Garrett jn and Lawrence went back to Belfast, Garrett married and had three children but he and the last born died of TB in within weeks of one another, Lawrence married an older woman and didn't have his own family. Patrick moved to Dublin and continued the family business, my gt grand father Michael came to England some time between 1882-85. It's an interesting story but I wish I knew from where they really originated. Thank you again MikeB
