Hi   Just to clarify the Canadian province in my original message:   "The anecdotal stories are that they sailed for Canada around 1825-6 and settled in Chatham, Northumberland, Canada, where they had a number of children, including Michael, born around July 1832."    

The family went to New Brunswick, so town is  Chatham, Northumberland, NEW BRUNSWICK Canada, where  Michael, born around July 1832 [according to my research]  The family may have lived on the outskirts of Chatham.

HI    Now that I have retired, I am back to researching this Fitzpatrick Family.   The New Brunscwisk census records state  that the parents reported that they came from Waterford, and while I presume that is the County in Ireland, it may be the Port of Departure in 1825, or thereabouts.  My "missing" Michael's parents were John Fitzpatrick and Mary Delaney.  I have been unable to find where they came from in Ireland, or when they died in Canada.  Any assistance providing details of the family living in Ireland before the 1825 departure, or suggestions about possible ships leaving for Canada at that time,  would be much appreciated.   Thanks.   Stephen Schollum, Cambridge New Zealand

I looked on the subscription site Roots Ireland for Co. Waterford. I located a baptismal record in 1794 in Carrick on Suir RC parish (see below). The father was not William. Many RC parishes do not have records back to the late 1700s so he may have been baptized in a church that does not have records back to 1800. I also did not find a John Fitzpatrick marriage to a Delaney in the time period before 1825 anywhere in Ireland.

Hi Roger, and other readers      Many thanks for the prompt information and new lead to follow up.  The birth year of 1794 certainly fits in with estimated ages stated in  NB Census records.  However, most interestingly, Honor, the mother's name, never appears as the name of any of John's NB descendants, which I believe is contrary to traditional Irish naming patterns..    I have found no record of the marriage in NB records, so always presumed they were married in Ireland before departure around 1825-26   I cant think that they would have gone elsewhere other than to eastern Canada, but the port or point of arrival in Canada has never been discovered.  It is possible that the ship was headed for Montreal, but that they disembarked at Miramichi, and went down to Chatham, New Brunswick.   Who knows.   One day, hopefully soon, I will revisit Ireland and see these placenames, such as Carrick-onSur and Mitchelstown  for myself.  I have other places  also to visit in Antrim (McAuley and Irvin), Limerick, (Durney and Hickey) , and Blackwater/Ballina/Ballyvalloo (Swan / Swann)    Regards and Thanks,    Stephen
