Could anyone tell me if there was an estate within a few miles of Castleblaney owned maybe originally by Lord Blaney and later perhaps by an English Officer Smith? I have an old note passed through family members after the family immigrated to the US around 1851 staying that various family members worked for this estate and lived in Tullyrahan. Would there be any information if so on employees of this family? Are there any cemeteries in that area with tombstone inscriptions? (I realize many were too poor to have them but just hoping) Would crossing back and forth between there and Armagh have been easy at that time? Were there families that lived on both sides?
I know that my gggrandmother Elizabeth Mulligan was born around 1800 and was married to a Samuel Lynch. She immigrated to America with some of her children but no record of him in the US. A relative years ago took down notes from the older Lynch generation and this is what she was told. I'd love any information about this family anyone might have or any connections or suggestions where to look for more information.
The note says the following:
Grama Lynch was born in Co. Armagh but raised with her brother Hugh in Co Monahan by her grandmother. Castleblaney was three miles from the farm . It was named for Lord Blaney . His home was owned by a retired English soldier. Grampa Lynch worked for him . He always spoke of him as Officer Smith. There were a lot of servants. Mrs. McManus' mother worked for Grandma's grandmother. Her name was Anne Lynch. Uncle Mike Lynch was the hired man. They were Gramdpa Lynch's brother and sister so you see they were all from the same place a home. The place was called the Parish of Muckno, Townland of Lyllyrahan?Tullyrahan? , City of Caslteblaney, County Monahan. County Cavan was farther north but they were all Fardowns. (?)

Dear Aileen: thank you for your email to the Ireland Reaching Out message board. You might find the Landed Estates database of some use. The website is: http://landedestates.nuigalway.ie. The database can be searched by family name, estate name or previous owners. If you have any questions, please let me know at jhalloranryan@irelandxo.com.
The very best of luck with your research.
Kind regards,
Jane

Aileen,
I looked in Griffiths Valuation for Muckno parish in 1861. There were a number of people named Smith who had land there but they appear just to be tenant farmers, not big land owners. Likewise in the tithe applotment records for 1827.
The RC parish records for Muckno don’t start till 1835 so it doesn’t seem likely your family will be in them.
You ask about crossing from Armagh to Monaghan in the 1800s. There would be no difficulty doing that. It’s just one county to another. (It isn’t really any different today).
