Tracking my wifes ancestry.

Timothy Barry and Ellen Roirdan both born Ireland produced a daughter Katherine / Kate/ Catherine Barry born December 24th 1877 County Cork, Ireland. Katherine immigrated to the United States and married Thomas McHugh. Thomas and Katherine were married on November 2nd, 1903 in Haverhill, MA united States and later resided in Lynn, MA United States.

Thomas McHugh was born 1874 in Ireland to John McHugh and Mary Gowlan/Goullen.

Religious affiliation here in the United States was Roman Catholic.

All of the Males occupations were involved with Shoe manufacturing here in the United States.

Any further information regarding Timothy Barry and Ellen Riordan line and John McHugh and Mary Gowlan/Goullen would be fantastic.

Regards,

Frank Merchel

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

I made a number of searches on www.irishgenealogy.ie and Roots Ireland and was unable to find a baptismal record for Catherine Barry. I also did not find a record for Thomas McHugh but I believe I located birth or baptismal records for three of his sisters. The family lived in Cloondergan townland in Dunmore civil parish near the border with Mayo and Roscommon. See below. I don't see the McHugh family in the 1901 census in Cloondergan. Is it possible the entire family emigrated to America?

Do you have any other info on the Barry family? Names of siblings?

  • Dear Roger,

This information is great for the Mchugh/Gowlan family.  I will search further on my side with the new information on the sisters. The liberties with surname spelling Goullen/Goulan/Gowlan will help altrnate searches.

Regarding Barry/Riordan the only child of Timothy and Ellen I have identified to date is Katherine / Kate/ Catherine Barry born December 24th 1877 County Cork, Ireland.

Any other search leads regarding above would be greatly appreciated!

    Best,

There are so many Catherine Barry birth and baptismal records yet none came up with the parental info you have.

Today, I searched the Mormon site www.familysearch.org and they showed the December 24, 1877 record with the parents you mentioned but there is no source document to show where that info came from. Puzzling??

Good work in finding the record.

The Griffiths in Co. Cork was conducted in 1852.

Your Barry family lived in South Cork city in an area called Ballintemple which is different from the civil parish of Ballintemple which is further to the east from Cork city. The civil parish and RC parish for Ballintemple would be St. Finbar's. Here is the Griffiths for St. Finbar's  http://www.failteromhat.com/griffiths/cork/stfinbars.htm   There are a number of Barry records but only a Margaret Barry shown in Ballintemple. No idea if she is connected to Timothy.

    Roger,

Thank you for the clarity on the locations which are quite confusing for us here in the states. To recap:

    *********************************

    Catherine Barry-Date of Birth 24-Dec-1877

Barony of Cork County, Civil Parish St. Finebar's, Townlands Ballintemple

    Father: Timothy Barry

    Mother: Ellen Riordan

    ***********************************

I have found the marriage record  for Timothy Barry and Ellen Riordan ( see attached)

Marraige Date of 22-Oct-1871 in Midleton, County Cork

Trying to read the document with its clarity.

Timothy Barry condition is listed as widower and his profession was a laborer. Residence is listed as Blackrock, Cork. Father is Edmond Barry.(living)

Ellen Riordan condition is listed as ???? and profession was none. Residence is listed as Ballinacurra, Midleton, County Cork. Father is Matthew Riordan (living)

Now we know Edmond Barry and Matthew  Riordan as the fathers of this couple.

Could you assist with details surrounding these two men.

    Regards,

    Frank

Matthew Riordan was listed in the 1852 Griffiths Valuation head of houshold listing for Middleton civil parish. I found a likely 1841 baptismal record for Ellen in Middleton RC. Mother was Ellen Butler. Did not find the marriage record. Ellen Riordan had at least three siblings: Frances 1835 Catherine 1844 Matthew 1853 The transcriptions of the baptismal records were on Roots Ireland which is a subscription site.

I would search www.irishgenealogy.ie free site under church records and see what you can find on the Barry family.

  • Roger,

I have found that John McHugh and Mary Gowlan were married January 20, 1856 in County Galway, Parish Dunmore, Diocese Tuam.  This would give a birth range of Mary Gowlan of 1835 to 1838 I'm guessing. Found a few Mary Gowlan's born in the range of years born in Tuam. Most promising would be maybe Mary Gowlan born November 19, 1836 to Pat Gowlan and Anne Redington. Could you help confirming Mary's birth year and parents?

    Thank for the help!

  • Frank:

The 1836 record is most likely since she would have been 19 at marriage as opposed to 17 with the 1838 record although girls were getting married at 17. There is no way to confirm that the 1836 record is the correct record without other evidence. Have you considered autosomal DNA testing?
