Hi I am Kevin Sullivan and looking for information about my grandmother Nellie (Ellen) Mulvihill Sullivan.  She was born My 5, 1870 to Daniel Mulvihill and Bridget Conway. She immigrated to the US around 1890 and married Eugene Patrick O'Sullivan, originally from Ballybunion.

I met a nephew of Gene's in BallyBunion around 1980. We understand that Nellie had siblings but lost track of them.

I plan to be in the Listowel/Ballybunion in late May, early June 2018. If possible I would like to meet anyone with information.

Sincerely,

Kevin Sullivan

  • Not sure if you had a full birth cert for Ellen (the reference above is a partial extract from FamilySearch), also found births & baptisms for a number of their other children - all from the free IrishGenealogy website:

Daniel Mulvihill born 5th May 1865
Patrick Mulvihill born 17th May 1867
Matthew Mulvihill born 6th December 1868
Ellen Mulvihill born 5th May 1870
Matthew Mulvihill born 15th July 1871
James Mulvihill born 25th July 1875

The Matthew born 1868 likely died young. All born to Daniel Mulvihill and Bridget Conway at Leitrim/Leitrim West townland which is located to the west of Moyvane. The townland is in Murher civil parish, Co. Kerry, and the births were registered in Glin registration district, Tarbert sub-district.

I also found some baptisms, some before the start of civil birth records in 1864, plus two after - all in Moyvane/Newtownsands Catholic Parish :

Baptism of Catherine Mulvihill 4th January 1860
Baptism of John Mulvihill 18th March 1861

Baptism of Jeremiah Mulvihill 14th September 1873
Baptism of Bridget Mulvihill 20th February 1879

I didn't find a marriage for Daniel & Bridget - the Moyvane / Newtownsands marriage records go back to 1855.

For reference - census returns showing Mulvihill households in Leitrim west townland :

1901 - Daniel, Bridget & Bridget jnr    Denis, Ellen & children

    1911 - Daniel & Bridget &c  Denis & Ellen etc

  •

    Shane,

    Many thanks.

    That is very helpful.

Any way of finding out if any Mulvihill's are still in the Moyvane/Listowel area?

    Sincerely,

    Kevin Sullivan

  • I'm not local to the area, but probably the best way is to ask around when you visit to see if there are any connections still in the area - due to privacy rules there is very little information on living people available online.

It may be worth trying to work forward with other children of Daniel and Bridget to see if it's possible to follow their lines and to see if they stayed in the same area - not all will be Mulvihill if there were any daughters...  Marriage records are available on IrishGenealogy up to 1941.

  • Hi Shane,

I'm also looking for Eugene P Sulllivan born September 10, 1874 around Gunsborough, Listowel, Ballybunion. He is my paternal grandfather. He was born to Patrick Sullivan and Honora (Nora) Ferris.

Please let me know if you find a birth record.

    Many thanks.

  • I found a birth of a Eugene Sullivan to the parents names you mentioned, it's a few years earlier that you thought, but is in the right area and the same day & month - Eugene Sullivan born 10th September 1869 Ballyhorgan townland to Patrick Sullivan occ. Farmer and Honoria Ferris. The informant is the father Patrick.

Ballyhorgan townland is located to the west of the town of Listowel, and not far from Ballyduff - Placename Database (logainm.ie)

The Gunsborough reference is likely to Gunsborough House, or the area surrounding, which is located about 10km to the east of Ballyhorgan & Ballyduff - see Google Map
