My great grandfather, John Thomas Wheeler, is believed to have been born in Lynn, Mullingar, Westmeath in 1852. He was Roman Catholic. He emigrated to Liverpool and worked in a haberdashery to raise money to sail to America. He ultimately sailed to New York in 1869 at the age of 16 years. He told his son that his mother was related to George Bernard Shaw the actual relationship is not certain. I believe he is related to another Wheeler family from Gainstown, possibly a nephew.

Dear mwheeler:
Many thanks for your post to the Ireland Reaching Out message board and welcome to the site!
I have forwarded the post to a few of our West Meath volunteers who may be able to assist you with your query.
In the meantime, you might consider creating an Ancestor profile for John Thomas Wheeler under the "XO Chronicles" tab at the top of the page. These profiles are updated weekly and are read by all our members and one of them may be also researching the same family.
Thank you for your interest in Ireland Reaching Out.
Kind regards,
Jane.

Thank you Jane,
There is another Wheeler family that also came to Illinois and settled in Dupage County, Illinois earlier than my grandfather. From my research here in Illinois, I believe that we are related. These Wheeler's came from Gainstown, Mullingar, Ireland and immigrated to America before my great-grandfather.. I believe our common ancestor might be Bernard Wheeler, b. around 1790 in Lynn, Gainstown, Mullingar, Westmeath.
Thank you for any help,
Mike

I noted that you mentioned Gainstown. This is also part of Mullingar as is Walshestown. You might keep these places in mind with further research.

Hi guys
Just fell across this post while updating some ancestry research I had done years ago. My name is Gary Wheeler and I live in Mullingar, County Westmeath in Ireland. My Dad was born and raised in Lynn, Gainstown, Mullingar and I am directly related to Thomas & Bernard Wheeler as listed above. I conducted a large research project in 2013, including viewing all birth, marriage & death records here locally on the ancestry of the Wheeler family as 2013 was the year of "The Gathering" here in Ireland and a lot of emigrant descendants of the Wheeler family contacted us about their Irish connections. Please feel free to contact me at gwengservices@gmail.com if you want any further info. I have a Google Drive folder on the Ancestry research that I done that I am more than happy to share with any Wheeler family members looking to research their history.
From my research, the Wheeler family are established here in the Mullingar area since well before 1720 and their descendants are found as far afield as Argentina, Australia, South Africa, Canada and the US.
Regards
Gary Wheeler

Hello, I visited Ireland in 2022 with my son. We met several relatives and acquired much information on our family in Ireland. I met my 3rd cousin, Patrick Whelehan from Derrymore, Killucan, Westmeath. His grandfather, Mathew Whelehan (1841-1912) was brother to my great grandfather, John Thomas Wheeler (Whelehan) (1852-1933) - all from Derrymore, Killucan. He also showed me the grave of my 3rd great grandparents, Michael Wheelan (1760-1820) and Julia (1772-1858) in Croboy graveyard.
I was able to get much information on the family except for what happened to three of my great grandfather's brothers: Michael (1835-?), Thomas (1850-?), and Patrick (1859-1883)
I am also looking for any information on the other children of Michael and Julia Wheelan. I have come to believe that Julia's maiden name may have been Webb as I have noticed several witnesses to baptisms and marriages named Webb.
I would appreciate any information on my family from Westmeath, Ireland.
Regards,
Michael Wheeler
