James J Burke is listed in ancestry.com resources to have been born to William Burke and Johanna Keefe on 8 Aug 1878. The family emigrated to Yonkers, New York within a year after. The source lists his place of birth as Helvick. He had two older sisters, Margaret, born 18 Apr 1873 and Ellen, born Sep 1874. The family is related to Thomas G Dee of Dungarvan (b. 29 May 1896) through Margaret Burke’s daughter, Margaret M Smith. The family is also related to Francis Fennell of Dungarvan (b. Apr 1848) through James Patrick Mahoney born in 1914 in Yonkers, who married Catherine Tremble, also of Yonkers. The Looby family of Dungarvan are related through the Fennell and Neville families.      Maureen Brett

  • Maureen:

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

Helvick townland is in Ringagonagh civil parish just to the east of Dungarvan. I will alert our parish liaison for Dungarvan about your message. Let me know if you have not heard back in two weeks or so.

  • Unfortunately, we have not yet received a reply from the liaison.  My husband and I are visiting Dungarvan June 22, There appears to be a strong connection of Dungarvan emigrants with Yonkers, New York, USA. Is this information that we might find in the Library? My ancestor appeared to have lived in Ringagonagh prior to arriving in Yonkers. Three of their children seem to have been born in Ireland. What is the main Catholic Church in Ringagonagh. The primary surnames we are looking for are Burke, Keefe, Fennell, Daly, and Looby. Thank you for your assistance. Maureen Brett

  • Hi Maureen!

Sorry you were not contacted. I will e-mail our HQ for a followup. From what I can see the RC parish would be Ring and Old in the Diocese of Waterford and Lismore. I would e-mail the library and see what info they have. Have a great trip!

  • Dear Dublinwoods:

    Thank you for your post.

Unfortunately, we don't have a volunteer in Dungarvan who is available to meet.  However, we can recommend the Waterford County Museum which is located in Dungarvan and who has an active genealogy presence there.  There is a dedicated person for genealogy there who will be able to assist you.

The link for the Museum is below:

If you have any more questions or need further assistance, please email me directly at:  jhalloranryan@irelandxo.com.

    Kind regards,

    Jane

  • Hello, I would like to know more about Thomas G. Dee mentioned in this post previously.Dungarven is a new parish,

for me to search on Dee ancestry. The Kilgobinet parish is the parish I was directed to to find relatives of John S. Dee

born 1745 with children Nicholas, Richard, Edmund, Margaret Anne, and Maurice.Apparently living near the river Suir close to the mountain range.

would Thomas G. Dee have any connection to John Dee?

  • Thomas Dee b. 1861 married Mary Anne Foley in March 1890 in Dungarvan. They had six children, Sally, Michael, Thomas, David, Ellen, and Angela. One child became a Catholic priest in Australia, one a nun also in Australia and a third became a missionary nun in Ceylon. Thomas Sr was on the Board of Directors in Dungarvan until his death at 58 years of age. His son Michael succeeded his father in that position. His son Thomas G Dee emigrated to Yonkers, New York, USA. To this point I have not discovered a John S Dee.  Bob Brett

  • Hello to all, I have Fennell and by marriage Dee as well as Mahoney in my Yonkers Ny family tree. Many of these members are from Dungarvan Waterford Ireland.  My branch is from Yonkers New York.  If a match, I would love to receive some information on family tree from Ireland and maybe I could provide some information from the Yonkers side of the tree.
