Greetings all,

I'm looking for any information about the Coleman family which emigrated to Canada - Simcoe County Ontario (Upper Canada) around 1834 or so. I have a Richard Coleman b. around 1799 who came to Canada with his wife Catherine b. about 1795, and two brothers - John b. about 1790 and William b. about 1804. They settled in Innisfil county, Simcoe County, Ontario (Upper Canada as it was know at the time). I have a fair amount of info on them here in Canada but little to nothing about the family back in Ireland. I have read accounts of the family being from County Tyrone - no mentions of a specific parish as well as being from County Donnegal.... all my searches have been in vain to this point. The family is C of E here in Canada if that helps.

Any info or ideas would be most appreciated. I live in Saskatchewan in the Canadian west.... Regina to be precise.

Cheers!

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

I saw you also posted in Co. Tyrone. There are very few records back to the late 1700s in Co. Donegal. I did search on Roots Ireland and found a William Coleman record a little earlier than your year of birth but did not locate a John or Richard so very likely this William record is not for you. Also did not locate a Richard Coleman marriage to a Catherine.

I would post Richard and Catherine's story on our XO Chronicles site and possibly someone will recognize a connection. https://www.irelandxo.com/ireland-xo/history-and-genealogy/ancestor-dat…

You may also want to consider autosomal DNA testing. You will also qualify for Y-DNA testing but autosomal is more effective in identifying relatives on all your lines.

  • Hi Roger,  Wow, it seems it has taken me a whole year to respond to your post.... I'm sorry... I appreciate your suggestions and hope someone reading my post may have some info for me. I'm a little hesitant submitting DNA these days with the insurance industry getting involved. It's a bit of a  disadvantage having ancestors who came to Canada in the early 1800's I guess. I will check with a cousin here regarding William's info... perhaps it may ring a bell with him. Thank you for looking into it and finding this.... here's hoping it leads to more info down the road. All the best from a very cold Saskatchewan Canada....currently -28c and -34c with the wind chill.

    Cheers!

  • Historical review, June 23-24, 1951 : a record of 100 years of progress : Innisfil Township centennial, 1850-1950 (Simcoe county, Ontario, Canada) an hour drive north of Toronto

this link, if you search "Coleman" is the reference to Tyrone, on page 37, and a photo of the Colman's 1840 log cabin is on page 2

A search for Tyrone will bring up other Irish settlers in Innisfil, from Tyrone, Ireland as well as the local town of Tyrone.

More detail about these brothers can be found on FamilySearch.org

    John S Coleman Male 1790-1793 b Tyrone Ireland – Deceased • 9KFL-PMY

    Richard Coleman Male 1797-1800 b Tyrone Ireland  – 21 June 1878 LZT3 -1VZ

    William Coleman Male 1801-1803 Ireland  – 25 October 1880 • L4HH-K43

Someone on FamilySearch.org in 2015 though the father was Robert Coleman 1770c-1840 b/d Tyrone, but left no information or sources.  I wouldn't rely on this.

I have sent and email to Rob Coleman
