Hi there,
My great-grandfather was James Melligan who was born in Gahanstown, Clonmellon, in 1845. He married Elizabeth White (1855) in 1872 in Clonmellon.
My grandfather was Thomas Melligan who was born in Kilrush, Clonmellon, in 1882. Thomas married Elizabeth Smeltzer (1887) in Dublin in 1908.
Johnny Melligan, my grandfather's brother, lived in Slate Cabin Row until his death in 1969. All the cottages in Slate Cabin Row were demolished in 2017.
I know that there are still relatives of one kind or another living in the Clonmellon area, so I'd be interested to hear from anyone who might be able to connect me with Melligans I've never known, or who might be able to pass on any Melligan information which might enlighten the darkness I perceive when I try to think of my Melligan ancestors.
I seem to remember a guy named Paddy Garry who seemed to be a great repository of information regarding the Melligans.
Thank you.
Tom Melligan

Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!
We do not get involved with trying to locate living individuals for privacy reasons. My only suggestion is to check out the online Irish phone book which is only a partial list of phone users. There are two Melligans lised in Co.Westmeath. You may want to send them a letter. Make sure you use the Residential TAB. https://www.eirphonebook.ie/

Hi Tom, I have an interest in Clonmellon history as my father was born there. I remember visiting the Clonmellon web site some years ago and seeeing a very old picture of a "Melligan" family. ( I am not sure of the spelling ), however, on checking some time later, this picture was removed. If this is of interest to you you may like to contact that website.
PS: I remember my Dad mentioning the Garry family!!
Regards
Jimmy

Thanks, Roger.
Thanks, Jimmy.
Regarding the Clonmellon website, I had posted photos on it some years ago. The site then disappeared and the photos disappeared with it. Sad. :(
The name is Melligan. My own father was the last Melligan in our Milligan family. I don't know why the old form of the name was discontinued.

Hi lads, clonmellon.com has been running since 2003 and is still going despite being offline for a while for some personal reasons, the Melligan photos were added again a few months back with a new redesign of the website.
Since finding this post I have added the text also.regards

There are Melligans still around Clonmellon. The last Melligan I met was my grandfather's brother, John, who lived in Slate Row on the Kilskyre Road. The row of houses has been demolished. :(

My great-grandmother Mary O'Neill was baptised in Clonmellon on 12th April 1830. She was the daughter of Denis O'Neil and Bridget Quinn. The couple had at least seven children baptised in Clonmellon, James (Jan 25th 1815); Dennis (Nov 17th 1820); James (Nov 19th 1822); Dennis (April 10th, 1826); Thomas (July 9th 1827); Mary (April 12th 1830) and Patrick (April 23rd 1833. Kilrush was stated as the place of residence of the parents at the time of the older James' baptism but for the remaining children it is recorded as Clonlough.
The death of Dennis Sr is recorded as taking place on June 23rd 1843. Bridget subsequenty emigrated to Australia with her daufghter Mary and sons Thomas and Patrick in 1848. Presumably the other children died young or remained in Ireland. They sailed from Plymouth aboard the 'Tasman' in June and arrived in Port Philip (Melbourne) in October. According to the Australian death certificates of Bridget and Mary, Denis' occupation was 'gardner'. I wonder therefore if he may have been employed on the Chapman estate at Killua?
