I am researching REID and KYLE in Carndonagh in the 19th century, particularly John Kyle born abt 1864, County Donegal[?] who married Rebecca Reid in 1888.

They had 5 children - Joseph, Elizabeth, Alexander, John and David, all born in Carndonagh.  At some point they left for Scotland, as from 1901 they are to be found in New Monkland, Lanarkshire.

I have teased out a sort of 'Who's Who' of the Reid family from census and BMD records, for which see attached pdf  'REID PLUS REID =  REID!'  

HOWEVER - I have no information on John Kyle until he is in Scotland.  In his death record of 1917, his parents are given as James Kyle [master baker] and Bella Ferguson.  His son registered the death and may have got a name wrong.  In 1901 and 1911 he gives his birthplace as Ireland.

What I have already may be found on my Ancestry tree - Thomas Oldfield 1905 family tree - which is public.

I would be glad of any information about John Kyle and his family; also any additional information about the Reids.

  • The marriage record for John Kyle and Rebecca Reid 9th August 1888 shows his father as Joseph Kyle, occupation baker. Current residences for both bride and groom listed as Cardonagh. SInce this information was probably provided by John I'd say more likely to be accurate than the death cert. I was not able to locate any likely birth for John, but since the year is estimated at around 1864 he may have been born before the start of registration of births. I was able to locate the birth of a likely sister - unnamed at time of birth born  29th June 1864 to Joseph Kyle and Isabella Mullan in Newtownlimavady. Joseph's occupation is Baker...

    Thanks to this new information I have found Sarah Jane Kyle, another daughter of Joseph Kyle [baker] and Isabella Mullan:  

    From her Death Record:
    Sarah Jane Kyle born Londonderry abt 1850, died 1 Oct 1996, parents Joseph [occ. - baker] & Isabella Kyle nee Mullan. Married [in 1871] George Godfrey [cabinet maker], born Londonderry abt 1850.  Address at time of her death:   212 Elliott St., Anderston, Glasgow.  They had 6 children:  Thomas, Edward, George, Edward, Isabella, John and Elizabeth.
