Dear Irish Kindred, My husband and I will be coming to Arboe, about April 28, 2018. My great-great-grandfather was Silas Purvis, listed in Mullanahoe in the 1864 Griffith's Valuation. Might we hire a guide to show us the cemetery (maybe C of I, not sure as the descendants are mixed Catholic, Methodist, Baptist, etc.) I come from the Purvis siblings who settled in Philadelphia, PA.  I look forward to hearing from you! -- Martha Purvis Corson

  • Regret I can’t help you with hiring a local guide. However here’s some information on the Purvis families.

7 Purvis farms in Mullanahoe in the tithe applotment records of 1826:

There are several Purvis families in Griffiths (which dates to 1859 for Mullanahoe).  Some also had land in Killycanavan nearby. All were Church of Ireland. In the 1901 census, there is a Silas Purvis born c 1840 on what appears to be the same farm as held by Silas in 1859 (plot 38). I suspect these were father & son:

Probate abstracts for Purvis from Mullanahoe from the PRONI wills site:

Administration of the Unadministered Estate of Silas Purvis late of Mulnahoe County Tyrone Farmer who died 1 December 1906 at Kilsally in said County granted at Armagh to George Robert Bear Auctioneer and Property Salesman, 4th March 1910.

Purvis Thomas James of Mullanahoe Stewartstown county Tyrone retired farmer died 21 September 1929 Administration Londonderry 12 August 1953 to Richard John Purvis farmer. Effects £11 10s

Silas’s property today is at the junction of Sessiagh & Killycanavan roads, near Coagh. Latterly it was just over 12 and a half acres.

Silas (in the 1901 census) married Marry Ann Farrell in 1886, when he was a bachelor, and then Eliza Martha White in 1896. Both pre-deceased him. His father’s name was Silas, according to both marriage certificates. There’s no sign of a death certificate for the 1st Silas, so he probably died pre 1864 (when death registration began).

I noticed another Silas Purvis farming in Mullanahoe, born c 1862 who died in 1920. His son Robert reported the death:

Can’t see that family in the 1901 or 1911 censuses.

  • Let me know how your visit went!  I am coming for a visit in August.  Would love to take a ride to the area and especially Ardboe Cross to say a special prayer for my Aunt Mary McCusker Baker who passed away last month.  She loved visiting Ireland <3
