My 3x great grandfather was Michael Scully. He was born around 1831 emigrated to the US from County Galway when he was about 15 according to family history. Also according to family history his mother's maiden name was Hynes. We do not know if he came alone or with family. I found a baptismal record August 1831 for a Mary Hynes and Michael Scully and their baby was Michael Scully. This would seem to fit except family history says his father's name was Patrick. I don't know if it was common to go by your middle name at that time and place, or to use a different name for church records. Does anyone have any connections to Scully in the area, or information about names of record?

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

The baptismal records for Carabane parish start July 24 1831 https://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0329  so there is a good possibility that your Michael was born and baptized before July 24 1831 and records would not be available. Possibly the August 27th record is for your ancestor but it is unlikely that if the father was Patrick that he would report Michael to the priest. Maybe the priest erred and repeated Michael after he wrote down Michael for the child. I did not see any other Scully baptismal records on Roots Ireland (subscription site) with a mother with the surname Hynes.

The 1826 Tithe listings for Co. Galway shows Michael Scully records in Lickerrig and Kilconicky civil parishes which correspond to Carabane RC parish. Did not see a Patrick record.

You may want to add Michael's story to our XO Chronicles site and maybe somone will recognize the family  https://www.irelandxo.com/ireland-xo/history-and-genealogy/ancestor-dat…

Have you considered DNA testing? Maybe you will match people with Scully connections.

  • Thank you for your response Roger. Yes I have also done DNA testing, as has my mother. Her GEDmatch kits are M755838 (genesis) and M755838. I haven't had a lot of luck matching to people with the last name Scully.
