Mary Shannon was my Great Grandmother. She was born in Arnagrogery, Aughadown, Co Cork on 13/9/1845 and died 18/12/1921 at Rupanyup, Victoria, Australia. Her Parents were Richard Shannon (baptised 5/9/1819 - 6/11/1884) and Anne Trinder ( abt. !819 -1/8/1908 Aghadown) I believe Richard Shannon's parents were John Shannon and Sarah Lambert but cannot find anything more. Mary was the second child and with her older sister, Ellen, emigrated to Australia. Ellen was 19yo and Mary 17 yo. They arrived in Melbourne, Victoria on 25/6/1863. At an Irish social gathering she met John Sweetnam and they married in Melbourne on Mary's 19th birthday (13/9/1864). I am hoping to find out more about my Irish forebears. I believe they were all Church of Ireland which is making a search very difficult. Thankyou Ann Greenwood

The parish is more usually spelt as 'Aghadown' and the townland is most likely 'Ardnagroghery'. I'm seeing slightly inconsistent details regarding the status of Aghadown Church of Ireland records – Ryan's Irish Records notes the older registers for the parish as “Lost”, while the entry for Aghadown on the latest parish list from the Representative Church Body library also show some records lost but others in local custody. It might be worth contacting the RCB to confirm the status of these...
There also seems to be a son named Thomas born to Richard, who shows up as the informant on Richard's death in 1884, and might be a coincidence but he married an Elizabeth Trinder. They appear in Ardnagroghery townland on the 1901 and 1911 census.

Thankyou for your reply and apologies for the slow response. I didn't know how much to include being fairly new to your website. I am going to add the sibblings of Ellen and Mary who remained in Ireland after the girls left for Australia. The third child was Annie (abt 1851 - 1913) who married Samuel Trinder(1841 -1928). They had 5 children: Elizabeth E (1872 - 1957) Anne (1875 - 1958): Michael John (1879 - ?): Richard (1880 - ?): Evangeline (Eva) (1885 - 1941). The fourth child was Lizzie (abt. 1855 - 1926) who married Phillip Shannon (1858 -1937). They had 8 children: Maria (May) (1884 - ?): Nannie (1885 - ?): Lucinda (Louise) (1887 - ?): Martha (Mattie) (1889 - ?): Ethel (1890): Charlotte (1892 - ?): Thomas John (1893 - 1968): Samuel Richard (1896 - 1921- murdered). The fifth was Thomas who you mentioned above (1855 - 1940) married Elizabeth Anne Trinder (1864 - 1922). They had 5 or 6 children. Richard John (1891 - ?): Mary Ellen (1893 - 1972): Elizabeth Ida (1894 - ?) I know Ida was living in Kent in the 1970's because an uncle took me to meet her there. Rosamond Jane (1895 -1989): Evelyn (1899 - ?) and maybe Robert. The sixth was Richard (1859 - 1909) He was a Reverend with the Church of Ireland. He married Sophia Long. An aunt wrote they had 3 children: John, Lesley and Vere but I can't find anything about them. The seventh was John (1861 - ?) He married Maria Swanton (1866 - ?) That is all I know of them. The eighth was Martha (1862 - 1948). She never married. I hope this might bring some more information. Thankyou again. Ann
