I am searching for more information on my great grandfather Robert Chambers, born in 1841 at Dromdrasdil, Dunmanway, Co Cork. He was one of at least 10 children of Charles Chambers and Mary Shannon.  Robert married Eliza McGivern in 1881 at The Parish Church Desertserges Co Cork. He died in 1911 at Ballenphellic, Ballygarvan.

Any help with information on Robert, his parents and siblings will be greatly appreciated.

Thanking you

Julie

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

Dunmanway RC parish is in the Diocese of Cork and Ross and their records are on the free site www.irishgenealogy.ie  However, when I search for all records in Cork involving Charles Chambers, I can only find one baptismal record for a child of Charles Chambers and Mary Shannon which is below. I tried searching for Robert Chambers-- no record and when I searched under Mary Shannon, I got the one record below.  I also searched the subscription site FindMyPast.ie and only located the one record below. Any thoughts?

Another volunteer, Shane Wilson, pointed out to me that the Chambers family was Church of Ireland. Dromdrasdil townland is in the civil parish of Fanlobbus and the Church of Ireland records for that parish are not available for that time period. Not sure why one child was baptized in an RC church?

Shane also located a 1901 and 1911 census record for a Robert and Eliza Chambers with children

He also found a Charles Chambers in Dromdrastil which could be a brother of Robert

  • I think your Robert may be a cousin to the Charles Chambers living at Dromdrasdil townland on the 1901 census. According to an extracted civil marriage on FamilySearch he married a Mary Buttimer in 1860, and they had children including one named Sarah in 1878.  Charles' marriage indicates that his father was Thomas (Robert gives his father as Charles). Griffith's valuation, dated 1852 for this area, shows a Charles & Thomas Chambers sharing a large property of over 200 acres in Dromdrasdil - possibly brothers ?

The Tithe Applotment records also show a 'Thos.' and 'Chars.' Chambers sharing 190 acres of eligible land at 'Droumdrastile', Fanlobbus in 1826.

  • Thank you Roger and Shane for your valuable input.

I have evidence of Chambers living in the adjoining townlands of Pookeen, Cullenagh, Dromdrasdil, Carrigskullily, Coolkellure, Inch and Dromleena and feel they must be related.   Obviously the enormous challenge will be to untangle all the links.   I do know that several cousins married, including Chambers to Chambers.  The same names crop up in each branch of the families too to add to the puzzle of who fits where.

The hunt goes on! Thanks again Julie

  • Hello all,

Just found this board. I am descended from George Chambers and Catherine Hurley (of Cork) and Ancestry tells me that George's father was Barnabus and that Barnabus' mom was Eliza Deane (married to Charles Chambers, b 1780 in Dunmanway, Cork). Any suggestions or info is greatly appreciated.

BTW, through DNA testing, I am trying to put together a clear and accurate picture of the Massachusetts descendants of Charles and Eliza from Dunmanway.

    Thanks,

    Ted Chambers

  • It looks like your George married Catherine at St Pancras Church of England (Anglican) in London on 1st August 1870 (London Metropolitan Archives/Ancestry). At the time of marriage George is recorded as a Bricklayer, and his father Barnaby as a foreman, the bride's father Cornelius is shown as a labourer, both the bride & groom are sown as 'full age' so 21 or over. Historic civil marriage records for England/Wales (same as Ireland at that time) do not include mother's names.

It's worth double checking the full details of records you find on Ancestry - not all the records they show originate from primary sources, e.g. a number of the results I see relating to George & Catherine are user submitted trees, which are not always accurate.

To search for vital records, e.g. baptisms & marriages, in Ireland the first step would be to establish the relevant Church of Ireland (also Anglican and equivalent to the Church of England) parish or parishes, and then check to see what records are available. Relatively few Church of Ireland records are currently available online for Co. Cork at the moment.

The town of Dunmanway is in Fanlobbus civil parish, and according to the latest (Sept. 2019) parish list from the RCB LIbrary, the early records for this parish have not survived. The list also notes that some original records may still be held by the parish, but dont give any details. Some later records for the parish are available in the National Archives (Dublin), e.g. baptisms 1855-1871, burials 1855-1871 and list of Parishioners dated c1848.

Dromdrasdil as mentioned in the original post is a townland within Fanlobbus civil parish.

A search of Fanlobbus parish on Griffith's Primary Valuation (dated 1852 for this area) shows a number of Chambers properties (just under 30), but no sign of a Barnaby or Barnabus, so possibly was deceased, lived in some shared or other ineligible accommodation or a building provided by an employer or lived somewhere else at the time. THe earlier Tithe Applotment records dated c1826 also show a number of Chamber properties eligible for these payments, but no sign of a Barnabus with property liable for this form of tax.
