Where could I locate a civil birth record for John Mahon b. c1829, possible Coolfin, Galway. His father may be Denis Mahon. John d.1894 at Looscaun, Gortaganna Cemetery.  John is my ggrandfather. Thank you. Carol Crowley

    Civil registration of births, marriages and deaths started in 1864 and many of the records can be found for free at www.irishgenealogy.ie   I looked on the subscription site Roots Ireland and did not see a baptismal record for John Mahon. If he was born in Coofin then his likely church was in Ballinakill RC parish but baptismal records for that parish start in 1838. Woodford records start in 1821.     I checked the 1855 Griffiths Valuation head of household for Ballynakill civil parish (Portumna PLU) and there were a couple John Mohans in that parish.One was in Woodford townland and another in Derryvunlan townland.
