Gavins of Skerries

Hello Gerry, do not think we have a volunteer in Skerries as yet so not sure if any Gavins there. I checked McLysaghts Surnames of Ireland and it does not mention Gavin as Kavanagh. Gavin is now more plentiful than Gavan, the septs (clans) are from south Munster and North Connaught with the name now most common in Mayo. 

I checked Cavanagh and Kavanagh and there was no link to Gavin, however I noticed a link betwee the name Cavan and Cavanagh. The most famous Gavin currently is the manager ofhte Dublin Football team, a gentleman by all accounts, see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jim_Gavin_(footballer)

I checked the 1901 census and there is only one Gavin family to suit, in Lusk, this is very close to Skerries, Skerries would be the nearest town of any size to them, your Grandfather is on the census, no age given so assume recently born, census taken in April. Also his father is listed as a baker. Information on hte family should be easy to get as the civil records post 1864 are free online and the marriage cert would show where Edward father lived when he married and his fathers name, the marriage most likely in the wifes parish though. Just checked they married in 1896 in Rush, registered in Balrothery, his father is dead also Edward and here name is Mary Dunne, father sailor, her father is a sailor and must be her sister living with them in the census. Rush is the given address, Rush, Lush and Skerries are more or less an extension of the other, lovely farmland in north county Dublin out on a sort of peninsula. http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/ Default 1911 so select 1901. No Gavins appear in Griffiths in the North Dublin area in Griffiths circa 1850.
