Hi,
I'm looking for info on my 2nd Great Grandfather, James G. Malloy. He was born 01 February 1844. He was from Donegal. According to the 1900 US census, James arrived in New York in 1864. There was a James Malloy arriving in New York from Liverpool, England on the ship "Gratitude" in 1864. I have recently obtained a copy of his death certificate. The document lists his father as Connell Malloy. His mother's maiden surname is listed as Campbell. Unfortunately, her first name is not listed. I have no other information about him.
I am finally realizing my lifelong dream of visiting Ireland! I will arrive on 24 Aug 2018. If possible, I would love to visit the place where my ancestors lived and pay my respects to those that rest in Donegal! If you have any information or stories about the Malloy family in Donegal I would love to hear from you!
Thank you!
Sincerely,
Judy Ritt
Additional Information
Date of Birth 1st Feb 1844
Date of Death 22nd Feb 1926
Hi Judy,
I am afraid that finding a Birth Record for your 2nd Great Grandfather, James G. Malloy would not be an easy task and unfortunatly it is because a lot of the Church Births registered in Donegal are from the 1850’s upwards. The Records and Years of Register for Donegal are as such:
http://donegal.rootsireland.ie/generic.php?filename=centres/donegal/sources.tpl
However you did mention that James Malloys father was called Connell Malloy which is fortunate as this wouldn’t be as popular a name as John, James, Michael etc..which makes it that bit easier to find the name in regards to whether they owned property or leasing land back in the 1850’s .
Throughout the Donegal as a whole there are only two gentlemen going by that name of Connell Molloy showing up in the 1857 Griffiths Valuation. The head of household listing for the Civil Parish of Templecrone civil shows two Connell Molloys http://www.failteromhat.com/griffiths/donegal/templecrone.htm
I am attaching a search result of this name, hopefully it will post properly.
www.askaboutireland.ie - Connel Molloy
www.askaboutireland.ie - Connell Molloy
I would be somewhat used at interpreting plots of land shown in the Griffith Valuation Maps with what's recorded on the Griffith Records and these two gentlemen, one in the townland of Leckenagh and the other owning land in Roisin Acres are located right beside each other which leads me to believe that Connel Molloy and Connell are actual the same person.
If you have any difficulty in finding these townland locations or comparing them with google maps I am sure I could put together a few slides that could direct you to that location if needed for driving.
If there is a good chance you think this might be relevant and a connection to your family, let me know and I will see what I can do.
Kind Regards Seamus

Hi Seamus,
Thank you so very much for your assistance! I believe that you may have found my Connell Malloy! In the Griffith Valuations for the Connell listed in Roisin (Roshin) Acres, there are also 2 Campbells listed. Since I know that Connell married a girl with the last name Campbell this all seems to fit together nicely!
I would be interested in visiting Templecrone and Roisin or Roshin Acres ( I've found 2 spellings). I am guessing that Templecrone and Roshin Acres are very small places. Do you happen to know if they have their own church and cemetery in Templecrone and/or Roshin Acres or would they likely share one with other nearby parishes? I would definitely like to visit these places during my stay in Ireland. Any information on how to locate these areas or any further info you or anyone could provide will be helpful!
Thank you again! I can't wait to see my ancestral homeland!!
Sincerely,
Judy

Hi Judy,
I am sorry for the delay with correspondence, I have important projects at work that require my full attension and it is only now I could look into this more.
I am afraid Connell Molloy above IS NOT your relation. While I was verifying futher my information on Connell using Census Records, I by chance came across another James Molloy similar in age to your Great, Granadfather in this very location, and although also married to an Ellen he had children that are confirmed as born in Ireland. Unfortunately there is no need for you to travel to these locations in Templecrone. I suppose it is like they say If something looks too easy...there is always something amiss.
All is not lost though. I have redirected my search for Connell Molloy and I have come across Two gentlemen called Condy Molloy that have location quite close to each other. Condy is like a pet name or nickname for Connell and as you will see it is used often in different families within the area.
I will fast track getting google map locations for both these gentlemen so you can easy travel there.

Hi Judy,
Below is a few links that when used with Googlemaps on mobile phone or tablet / GPS will take you to The location of where they lived, I am sending both just incases I run out of time figuring out which one is most likely Connell Malloy father to James G. Malloy.
Really sorry about delays, researching family such as this from back in the mid 1800’s is a bigger task than people take for granted, it more than often can be a matter of weeks rather than days.Condy Molloy from Leamagowna, in the Parish of Inishkeel, Co.Donegal

I have a feeling that this is most possibly the homeplace (rather than Molloys in Kilcar below), as there is a lot of similar family name that are in James G. Malloys (your own family tree) such as William, Edward, James and Agnus that are present with this family of Molloys as you can see in the 1833 Tithes and also the 1901 and 1911 Census, please have a good look and see what you think. There is no way I can be sure.

This is the other Molloy family and although not as obvious as above they can not be ruled out without a lot of time spent researching further. I have added the 1901 and 1911 Census, please search for Molloys in nearby townlands as well as there is one or two within my links. Google maps street view comes to a dead end as far up this old laneway as possible and the location is a further 200 Metres up this laneway. On the left. There does not seem to be any one living there in the census years however in townland Crowrane ther is a Bernard family and a Edward and Connell Molloy

I am glad you are happy Judy. Please have another look above as I have re-edited my directions and links to make it that bit easier to follow and I am adding these few screenshots to help orientate yourself to the surrounding area. My best advice I can give you is be brave and dont be afraid to simply drive down and say hello to whomever is living in these locations and nine out of ten times they will help you as they will surely understand, I am sure of it.
Please enjoy your holiday and if you have the time we would love if you were tell us how you get on when your are home safe.
All the very best

Hello Seamus,
I had a wonderful time in Ireland! I love the culture and the warm, welcoming people I met during my travels. I was able to travel to many places in Ireland. Unfortunately, I had to cancel my plans to go to Donegal due to illness. I was quite disappointed but things happen for a reason. Now I can devote the next year to sorting out the Connell /Condy Molloy issue and figure out the right family.
I was able to visit Collinstown, Westmeath County, the village where my other Irish family, the Nooney's lived. It was the highlight of my trip!
I am already planning another trip to Ireland next year! Donegal is at the top of the list of places to visit! It will be even more meaningful knowing that I will be visiting the correct place.
You told me that the Connell/Connel Molloy could not be my relative. What records did you use to make that determination? Also, how do I figure out if Condy Molloy is my relative? Any further assistance would be greatly appreciated and now there is no rush! I have a year to work on this! Thank you for all of the help you have given me. It is so nice to have assistance from someone who is in Donegal! Perhaps when we know where in Donegal I will be going you could recommend a hotel that would be in that area.
Looking forward to my visit next year!
Sincerely,
Judy Ritt

Hi Judy,
I am delighted to hear you had such an enjoyable trip in Ireland, living here we always enjoy hearing that the culture, welcoming and warmth are still evident in everything we do, and I love that you have plans to travel to Donegal penciled into your return visit here. I will be sure I have to check up my notes and research that dismissed Connell Molloy in the parish of Templecrone and see if we can find out more information regarding Inishkeel and Kilcar. I happen to be extremely busy at the moment and I beg your indulgence here, I assure you I will get back to you as soon as I can.
Kindest regards
Seamus

Hi Judy, Connell Molloy from Roshine Acres is my great, great grandfather. His father was called James Molloy; so that rules him out! Best wishes, Natalie
