Hello,

I'm looking for Information on Francis Flanagan. Francis was one the first settlers on the South Coast of New South Whales.

In his orbituary (attached), published in the Sydney Freeman's Journal (a newspaper for Irish Catholic free settlers) his birthplace is recorded as Beula, Shannon View, County Galway and his birthdate is given as the 15th of February 1780.

I have searched for information on Francis on Ancestry and though I found no information on him, I did find a lot of Flanagan records around Loughrea and assumed that it may be a prominent family name in the area and that perhaps there are Flanagans still in the area who could identify this Francis Flanagan?

Aside from being an ancestor of mine, Francis was also instrumental in the founding of the town of Moruya (NSW) and also significant as a prominent early Irish Catholic. Prior to his emmigration he apears to have been a succesful tailor in COrk and London. He emmigrated to NSW on the invitation of the Viscount Normandy. He purchased a significant piece of land, then at the furthest limits of legal settlement in the colony in circa 1827, but was prevented from settling it by the direct intervention of of then Governor Ralph Darling, who didn't regard the Irish Catholic Flanagan to be an acceptable member of the land owning classes. Francis was only able to settle his land in 1829.

Any assistence in shinning a light on the background of Francis would be most appreciated.

Regards, Matthew Keating
