  • This looks to be your family in the 1901 census. 5 children listed. Both parents born in Co. Down.

Richard & Martha married 11.11.1893 in Belfast, Gt Victoria St Presbyterian church.

There is a birth for a Richard Sharpe on 9th Feb 1873 in Tullynagee. His mother was Jane Law. Father was a farmer (whereas I notice the 1893 marriage certificate has him as a clerk). However it’s the only birth in Co. Down around that time.

The Valuation Revision records show a Robert Sharpe farming plot 34 in Tullynagee. That was a 29 acre farm. He takes over as tenant in 1875 and leaves in 1879, so he didn’t stay too long.

    Siblings to Richard:

Robert Henry Sharp born 15.3.1871 Belfast (father’s occupation: gentleman).

Andrew Stewart Sharpe 25.9.1874 Tullynagee, regd Newtownards

    William Sharpe 3.12.1875 Newtownards

Charles Sharpe 6.8.1879 Belfast (born Lavinia St, Belfast but father’s occupation shown as farmer).

This could be Charles in 1901:

No sign of him in the 1911 census.

No sign of Andrew or Andrew in the 1901 census. Several Roberts but couldn’t say if any might be yours.

I looked for a marriage between Robert Sharpe & Jane Law pre 1871 but did not find one. Might they have married outside Ireland?

Your year of birth for Martha has to be in doubt if she married in 1893.  If born in 1879, she would only have been 14 when she married. So I don’t think that can be quite right. She gave her age as 20 on the marriage certificate so probably born around 1873, which seems more likely. Can’t see her birth in Co. Down though.

I can't help you immediately but we may have a tie there somewhere.  I'm searching for family of John Sharpe, Sarah Simpson Sharpe and Robert John Sharpe reportedly of Ahoghill.  Robert was born to John and Sarah on Dec 11, 1834.  John was born in Ahoghill in 1804 and there is a record of a John Sharpe in residence 1833 in Ramoan, Antrim, Ireland but I don't have confidence in that yet.  I understand he was a farmer but again that is loose.  Sarah Simpson died in 1848 and Robert and John left for America that year.  I'm looking for any further information on Sarah and any other family for John.  I note that you had a Robert in your family. I visited Ahoghill and scoured the graveyard at the old Presbyterian Church and the old town graveyard but couldn't find anything.  Of course birth, death and marriage records don't go that far.  Robert John's death cert is attached.

    Steve Sharpe

  • Hope someone is able to help.I have found a copy of the birth certificate for Jane Law and Robert Henry Sharpe  from Old Church, St. Pancras, London, England on January 11,1871. It is signed by both fathers, listing Robert Sharpe (senior) as groom’s father and Andrew Law( farmer) as bride’s father. 15 March 1871 shows the birth of the son of Robert and Jane, Robert Henry Sharpe( junior)  in Belfast, No.6,Antrim, Ireland. I am unable to locate a record of Andrew Law or the birth of or family of Jane Law at this time. In 1911 Robert (junior)is 40, married to Sara( nee Sadie) with 2 children, a son, Sydney, age 10 and a daughter, Aida, age 8. He is a travelling flour salesman, living on Rathgar St, Windsor, Antrim. But I can’t find his parents, Jane and Robert or Jane’s family.

I have had no luck tracing Martha’s father, David Boyd or finding the name of her mother either. Appreciate any assistance.

  • Kimberly,

I searched the birth records again and cannot find a birth for Martha Boyd to a father named David. I searched around 1873 plus or minus 10 years. (Martha’s age on her marriage cert and in the 1901 census both give a year of birth about 1873). One possibility is she was illegitimate and didn’t know her father’s name. She may have simply made up a father’s name to avoid any embarrassment over leaving the box blank. Or if illegitimate she may only be registered under her mother’s surname.

Another possibility is that her birth was registered without a name. (Many were at that time). For example, there is an unnamed female Boyd birth on 8.3.1874 in Malvern St, Belfast to David Boyd, labourer and Maria Gilmour. The father David was in Australia at the time. The only snag with this birth is that Malvern St is in Co Antrim not Down (which is where Martha is recorded as being born in the 1901 census) but perhaps Richard made a mistake when completing the census return.

Regarding Jane Law’s birth, if she was born in Ireland then it will have been before the start of statutory birth registration (1864) and so to trace her you would need to have some idea of where she was born, and what denomination she was, in order to search church records (which may not be on-line). Do you know for certain that she was born in Ireland. If she and Robert married in London, perhaps she came from England?  (English birth certificates started in 1837 and they also have censuses for 1851 & 1861 which she could be in if living there). Have you found Robert & Jane in the 1901 census? (If so, it should tell you where they were born). If you can’t find them in the 1911 census, then either they could have died, or alternatively, no longer living in Ireland.
