  • Hi John I looked at Registers NLI here and see that there are no records for Drumreilly marriages for that period, https://registers.nli.ie/

I also searched on Roots Ireland which sometimes has records no found elsewhere but no marriage, oddly a Margaret Fee married a Thomas Prior in Oughteragh a neighbouring parish to the two Drumreilly upper and lower ones. The only Hugh Byrne has banns called in 1855 in Manorhamilton but the spouse is Mary Byrne.

There are 20 Margaret Fee marriages nationally between 1850 and 1860 but the only one in 1857 is above.

You might like to post on the Leitrim Genealogy Facebook page, apply to join to see if anyone is aware of the families in Drumeilly as it appears there are no church records of the marriage and civil records had not commenced. Byrne is a common name nationally but Fee is less so.

There was a Margaret McFee born in 1839 but not in that parish, father Peter and mother McLaughlin.

I assume you have tried the DNA route otherwise there are no available records unless the family made it into the newspapers etc but you still cannot be sure if it was your people.

There are 4 Fee hits in Drumreilly in Griffiths here http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/ As the survey was printed in 1856 it is likely one of them is your Margaret's Father there are 74 Byrne hits of whom 5 are Hugh but the one in Innishmagrath is nearest to Drumreilly I think, may be your Hughs father, as only the leaseholder is recorded it is possible the Hughs are one and the same person. At best these are only indictitive of who they might be or might be from.

The library link is here but most papers are later than your dates, Fee is a difficult search as you are no doubt aware as reocords of monies due are  returned.

    Good Luck,

  • Thanks, Pat,

I explored the Griifiths thoroughly and had the same results as you.  Hugh Byrne's fther was Hugh and his mother was Margaret Cox; Margaret Fee's father was alo Hugh and here mother Nancy McIlwhinnie.

I am begining to think that perhaps the Drumreilly notation is not correct; or perhaps Margret Fee, and possibly Hugh Byrne, lived in a border county; isn;t there an Upper and Lower Drumreilly?

    I'll explore more next weekend.

    Thanks again for you investigation!
