My maternal Great Grandfather x 2 is Patrick Cusack who was born in Askeaton, Limerick in 1829 transported to Sydney, Australia on the “Havering” in 1849 along with his brother, John- both convicted of larceny and sentenced to seven years for stealing.
My question revolves around his parents, Michael Cusack and Mary (Green) and his sister, Honora who possibly remained in Ireland.
(There is a Michael Cusack who was transported to Van Diemen’s Land on the Neptune” also in 1849. Unsure whether this is the father of Patrick and John)
As I have been unable to discover very much about the Cusack’s life in Ireland, any information as to their life in Limerick, their livelihood, where they may be buried, would be greatly appreciated.
Many thanks
Carmel

Dear Carmel:
Thank you for your post to the Ireland Reaching Out message board.
You may be able to find further information about the Cusack family from Askeaton through graveyard research. Many of the County Limerick graveyard transcriptions are online through the Historic Graves website. You can view them at the link below:
You might also look at the Civil Records. I noted that there were three marriage records for a Honora Cusack between 1864-1871, but these are not online yet. You might note that the first name noted on the Roots Ireland website as "Hana." is actually Honora on the church baptism register.

Her baptism entry is at the upper left corner of the page.
If you need further assistance, please let us know.
You might consider creating an Ancestor Profile on the XO Chronicles. These profiles are widely read by our members, updated weekly and have assisted other who are researching the same families. You may find that there are other members who will share information with you to advance your research.
Please let us know if you have any other questions.
Kind regards,
Jane.

Hi Carmel,
I have a bit of info, not about the exact people you mention, but the same surnames and they are from Askeaton.
I discovered mention of Patrick Greene b 1824 in Askeaton who married Mary Mangan in Askeason 8 Feb 1860. They emigrated to Tomdeely South, Australia. Mary moved to New York, USA about 1875. Patrick Green and Mary Mangan had 11 children, one a daughter Nelly, b 1874 had a child born in Queens, New York.
John Mulvahill b 1797 of Shanagolden married Mary Cusack. They had daughters Mary b 1831 and Bgt b 1832-34 that emigrated to Australia, arriving in Portland, Victoria in 1854.
The above info was taken from West Limerick Families Abroad by Kate Press and Valerie Thompson.
Unfortunately, I find no other instances of these surnames in any of the local history books I own.
Best wishes,

Hi Patti
Thank you very much for taking the time to reply. As you point out, not exactly the people I am searching for, but I still find the surnames coming from the same area very interesting.
I very much appreciate the people on this site, who graciously give of their time to research and reply. (I have a number of posts going now...Cusacks from Limerick; Cafferys from Cavan and Mahers and Ryans from Thurles.)
All input is gladly received and helps put the jigsaw together for me and hopefully, for others as well.
Kind Regards
Carmel
