My Great, great Grandfather was Samuel Birchill. He was born in County Cork abt. 1830, in the Skibbereen area ( I am told by a cousin, living in Australia). Samuel was transported with his brother John in 1851 to Tasmania. He lived in the district of Hobart. He married Ellen Curran.

Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!
The free site www.irishgenealogy.ie has church records for the Diocese of Cork and Ross including Skibbereen. Assuming Samuel was Roman Catholic, the record below may be for him. The actual spelling of the townland would be Gorteenalomane in Creagh civil parish. I did not locate a baptismal record for a John Burchel with the same parents.

Thanks for your reply. I don't think this is the right Samuel as his father's name was Abraham and his mother was Catherine. Since posting this message about my great, great grandfather I have actually travelled to Skibbereen and visited the geneology centre there. The geneoligist was able to find my gr grandfather but I appreciate your help. Kind regards Mary Overbeek
