I am looking for descendants of a Richard Coake (Coke, Cooke) and Catherine Ryan who came to Australia in 1884 with a ‘nanny’ Mary Pollard from Ballintaggert, Ballingarry Tipperary with their ten children Margaret b. 1860, John 1861, Patrick 1863, Bridget 1865, Maria 1867, Joanna 1870, Catherine 1872, Michael 1874, William 1876 and Richard 1880.

John married Mary Pollard in Australia in 1886 and returned to Ireland. I assume to the parish and townland where the children were born

I understand that before coming to Australia they did moved around for the health of Catherine Ryan and may have been in Callan Kilkenny for a short time. Catherine Ryan may have been born in Kilkenny and Richard and Catherine may have married in Kilkenny.

Descendants of this couple would be about 4th cousins to my children.

    Hi Robyn,

I'm Noreen, the Ballingarry Parish Liaison. I actually grew up in Tinnock where the Cokes settled.

I've had a look and it appears that none of the children of John Coke and Mary Pollard ever married. Richard died in April 1963, Mary died in April 1966 and John died in October1966. I found their death records on http://www.irishgenealogy.ie I'e inserted copies to this post.

The family grave is in the graveyard beside the Church in Ballingarry and I have inserted a link to the grave for you to view. The transcription states Richard died in 1965 but the civil record shows 1963.

Sorry I couldn't be the bearer of good news :-(

    Best wishes,

    Noreen

  • Hi Noreen,I am curious as to what knowledge you might have about why the First Pollards may have came to this area of Ireland?I know my Pollard(English)grandfathers married at least three generations of Irish grandmothers.I know about Langley(Cromwellian solder)As I understand at least some of the Pollards were blacksmiths.Did they come with Cromwell? Were they recruited and hired by Langley?Just wanted to see what light you might shine on this question?Dr.James Pollard

    Morning Noreen

Thank you so much for the information you have given me. The headstone that you included in your reply sent me off researching  Mary Coke nee Pollard's old brother the Rev John Joseph Pollard who died  in 1884 at the alter rails  of a heart attack and the tender age of 39/40 in Moruya Mission North of Sydney. Mary Pollard had only arrived in the colony with the Coake family, two months earlier as  the nanny for their younger  children. Please find a clipping in the newspaper re the incident

I would appreciate if you are able to tell me the resting place of John Coake and Mary nee Pollard,  John, Richard and Mary's parents.

    Many Thanks

Robyn O'Brien the wife of a first cousin once removed to John, Richard and Mary Coke   [John  Michael Stuart O'Brien whose O'Brien family's  ancestors come  from Waterford, Waterford city  from about the 1850's and prior to that Carrick-on-Suir Tipperary.
