Hello everyone,

I am doing research for a very good friend of mine. I am looking for the birth parents of Robert Doyle B circa 1840. He immigrated to NY @ 1871 and was married to Ann Murray and had two children: James 1876 and Robert 1878. I know that the family came from St Peters, Athlone, Roscommon and stayed mostly on Connaugt street. Roberts father is James Dolye. However I believe Robert was born in Westmeath.  I am basing his father on the fact that Robers niece Brigid Mary Sweeney who went by Mary was in the 1900 census with her Uncle Robert.  I found her marraige record that states her parents were John Sweeney and Mary Doyle from Athlone, Roscommon.  I am certain that James had multiple marraiges.  Here is what I know:

James was married to Mary Larkin and had a Robert in 1841 in Kilcleagh along with an Edward not sure if this is Roberts parents this is just a guess.  However i am sure that James married again in Ballyloughloe to Brigid Monahan and had the following children: Mary 1855 M John Sweeney, Margaret 1856 M Dudley Francis Mulrennan, then the family moved to St Peters Athlone: Bernard 1858, Brigid 1859, Ann 1861 M Michael Naughton, and James 1863. Brigid died August 23, 1867 in Bealnamulla Athlone, age 38

James remarried to Maria Obrien in 1870 states civil his father is Patrick and church states William they had the following children. Edward M Jane Macken. Twins Eleanore and Catherine 1873 neither survived. Twins Eleamore and Elizabeth 1876. Eleanore aka Helena M Edward Martin, Elizabeth M Micheal Drury, Thomas 1877, Bartholomew M Edith Macaluly, Mary Augusta 1880 and John Michal 1881. James died in 1898.

I have received records on Robert from NY however it does not state his parents. I know these families are connected and that Mary is Roberts step sister but I cannot prove his parentage.  i use rootsirealnd.ie and ancestery along with some other sights but not knowing the parishes very well I am coming to a brick wall proving Roberts line. I would appreciate any input or guidance. If the James and Mary Larkin are Roberts parents it is unlikely he was widowed for almost 12 years before being remarried or I am missing something.  Through the sponsors etc the children of Brigid and Maria remained very close however I see no Robert in any birth or marraige as sponsors before he immigrated in 1871. Sorry so long and maybe confusing but I would love any input.

Thank you

  • Dear Katie:  You might consider creating a few Ancestor profiles for some of the ancestors that you have mentioned above.  The profiles created can be done through the XO Chronicles feature which is located at the top of the page.  The Chronicles are widely read by all our members and very often, there may be others who are researching the same families as yourself.

If you have any further questions, please let us know via this thread.

The very best of luck with your research.

    Kind regards,

     Jane

  • Thank you very much Jane I will do that.  I did  have another question in regards to the areas I listed.  I know that where the family came from is very close to the westmeath and roscommon boarders however I have been trying to follow the path of the family and it seems it started in Kilcleagh then to Ballyloughloe, then to St Peters Roscommon then Kiltoom and Bealnamuella back to St Peters Roscommon.  I am not familiar with the demographics of these areas are there more specific parishes etc I could be looking in?

    Thank you
