John Moran
I am trying to find more information about my GGGrandfather John Moran.
What I know:
John Moran married Mary Nelson 30th September 1833
Roman Catholic Roscommon and Kilteevan Diocese of Elphin County of Roscommon microfiche
John & Mary’s children: Alice 1834, Winnifred 1836, Daniel 1838, Anne 1843, John 1845, Catherine 1849
Their address is given as Culleenboy (Killeenboy), Kilteevan
Alice married Thomas Fahey 1863 and soon left for Australia.
1868 Anne & Catherine were sponsored by Alice to emigrate to Australia. According to the immigration records, their father John Moran was dead by 1868.
Winifred Moran married Patrick Caffrey and must have taken in Winifred’s mother as when Mary Moran died 10-January-1883 aged 70, her son-in-law, Patrick Caffrey was present at her death.
On Mary’s death records, her late husband John was described as a carpenter.
On daughter Ann’s death certificate, her father, John, was described as an Architect.
Is there any way to find out if there are any buildings left today that John may have worked on?
Any help or guidance would be very much appreciated.

Hi Wayne
Welcome to the IrelandXO Roscommon Community!
A death record for John Moran might shed some light on the architect / carpenter reference. If he is the John Moran of KILLEENBOY recorded in Griffith's Valuation, it was highly unlikely he was an architect. As his holding was under 2 acres he was a small farmer and could have been a local carpenter. An architect would have likely had a town address.
06-Apr-1874 Winifred Moran of Culleenboy married Patrick Caffrey of Kilteevan. Her father is recorded as "John Moran, Farmer" (I would expect to see "deceased" in brackets here had he died in 1868). It looks like he died sometime between 1874 and 1883 (by when Mary was a widow). However, I couldn't find a Civil Record of his death. So he may well have died before Civil Records began. Hmmm...

Thank you Rua. I haven't been able to find anything on John, other than the marriage. The following is what I base his death prior to1868:
New South Wales
List of immigrants per ship Devonport as examined by the Immigration Board arrived 31st July 1868Name Age Calling Native Place & Country Parents Names & if alive their Residence Religious Denomination Read or Write Relations in the Colony
Moran Ann 20 Servant Roscommon Ireland John & Mary Father dead mother Kilteevan Roscommon Ireland RC Both Sister Alice Fahey Sydney NSW
Moran Kate 17 Servant Roscommon Ireland John & Mary Father dead mother Kilteevan Roscommon Ireland RC Both Sister Alice Fahey Sydney NSW
It is a funny thing to describe father's occupation as an architect if he was solely a farmer - he was described as a carpenter and maybe his daughter, Ann had seen or known of buildings he had worked on or designed. She was 20 when she left Kilteevan. It all could have been a flight of fancy, but I like to look for the rainbows.
Kind regards
Wayne
