Hello all,
I am trying to find Elizabeth COSTINE, one of my 3rd great grandmothers. Elizabeth married John SLOANE (1825-1866) on 11 February 1845 in Cloyne, Cork, Ireland. They had six children that we know of, namely, William Henry, Christopher, Mary Anne, Eliza or Elizabeth (my direct ancestor), Ellen and James between 1846 and 1862.
I have no further information about Elizabeth but would like to trace her ancestry. Is anyone able to point me in a good direction?
Many thanks.
Kind regards,
Lizanne Ellis

ADD E[B ANDEEREEN]The marriage record is on roots but has no age or father's name of course!
IF they followed the irish naming pattern her father's name would have been Christopher according to the names you have; I could only find William Elizabeth Ellen & James on roots.
No luck in the `841 or 51 Irish Censuses
No burial record for her on roots to get an age from either I'm afraid

Thank you so much Col, for searching on www.rootsireland.ie for me... I was so thrilled to receive your report! On closer examination, however, unfortunately these Elizabeth COSTINs' baptisms were within a few years of my Elizabeth COSTINE's marriage in 1845... seems to me that they're sadly not good matches.
One day, when I have sufficient resources for a subscription, I hope to search further.
In the meantime, thank you very much again for taking the time and trouble to do this search for me. I appreciate folk like you. I do the same kind of voluntary work locally for those who contact me in similar situations for similar searches.
Many thanks.
Kind regards,
Lizanne

Dear Lizanne:
Thank you for your post to the Ireland Reaching Out message board.
There are a few resources for Cork that you may find helpful. The Cork Genealogical Society has a wonderful website as does the Cork City Library.
The links are below:
http://www.corkgenealogicalsociety.com/
http://www.corkarchives.ie/genealogy/
In the meantime, you may also wish to add an Ancestor profile on the XO Chronicles for any of your ancestors. You can do so by clicking on the link at the top of the page marked "XO Chronicles". Ancestor profiles are a great way to share information about your ancestor and it allows others who may be researching the same families to share and collaborate with you.
If you have any further questions, please let me know.
Kind regards,
Jane.

Dear Jane,
Thank you so much for your kind assistance, I will happily take a look at what the Cork Genealogical Society and City Library have to offer in the way of direction. I will need to spend some time putting together an ancestor profile for our Henry BARTMAN (1848-1900) and Eliza/Elizabeth SLOANE (1857-?) who emigrated from Ireland to South Africa after they had married and their first child, Mary Jane BARTMAN (1876-1964), was born. Their third and youngest child was one of my maternal grandfathers - John Walter BARTMAN (1884-1938). It is Elizabeth's parentage that specifically intrigues me at this point in time, hence the enquiry regarding John SLOANE and Elizabeth COSTINE.
Putting humble Irish families together has proved to be intimidating at the best of times. I will do my best to put together their details to post on the XO Chronicles soon.
Many thanks again for your kind assistance herein.
Kind regards,
Lizanne

Hi had a quick look at the Original Catholic Parish register for parish of Cloyne and came across two Marriages for a James Custeen married Joan Collins July 1792 and Will Custeen married Frances Donovan Feb 1802. This appears to be earlier spelling for Costine up until Griffith valuations 1850. Maybe a Search on roots for Custeen or Custein would find your ancestor. or you have the option of looking at Original Cloyne records online.
I also did a search In Tithe Applotment 1831 for Custeen and found a Richard and Patrick in Ballingranne and Edward and Michael in adjoining Townland Of Moanagurra near Ballycotton Co Cork. You had a Wm Sloane and Chs Sloane in Ballycottin. This was the only Sloane family in this area. It was more common for families to marry near neighbours. Regards Will

Hello Will,
I am so thrilled to meet such helpful folk like you on this website, you have been so very kind. Thank you for all the trouble you have taken to search for, find and share your findings with me here, I really am grateful for directions like these. I have tried variations of the Costin(e) surname that I could think of but it's great to have suggestions of more variations and I will have a fresh look at the resources available with new eyes for possibilities.
You're right about families marrying their close neighbours - when we visited Ballycotton in September 2016 we were fortunate enough to find and visit with William Sloane and his wife, Theresa (Lynch) Sloane who had both grown up and were schooled down the road from each other, practically, right there on the Pier. What a delightful spot Ballycotton and its surrounds are! I would also not want to leave if I lived there...
Many thanks again for your kind assistance.
Warm regards,
Lizanne
