Dear Everybody,

My name is Peter Hartog. Together with relatives we wouldlike to visit the area of our ancestor, the O Leary's/ Leary's in the area of Fiddown, Piltown and Turkstown. Many were baptised in the parish of Owning and Templeorum. Ciivil registration of birth was done in Carrick-on -Suir. In the Annex you find documents about birth, marriage.

Could we get advice or even help where to go and stay in this area?

Also I have questions about my greatgrandfather Michael Leary, tailor.

He was born around 1805, maybe in County Cork, and died in Piltown, Kilkenny in 6 april 1879 aged 74 according registration of death (ANNEX). He did marry in 1843 in Fiddown, Cty Kilkenny with Bridget Gaul (ANNEX). His oldest son James Leary was my direct ancestor, also tailor. He was also tailor, maybe trained  as a tailor at the same place  as his father Michael.

Where  was Michael born? According to his family he came from (County) Cork. Where did he learn his profession as a tailor?

Michael did marry in Fiddown in 22 February 1843 with Bridget Gaul (ANNEX). They had 6 children:

Their children (baptism dates):

28.2.44 James (senior), Turkstown,  my greatgrandfather, died in 1918 in Piltown and his wife Anne Keane in 1921, also in Piltown (I have all his information, marriage and children born in Piltown). He was a master tailor.

15.4.46 Patrick, Fiddown (ANNEX),

3.8.48 John, Fiddown (ANNEX)

Marriage John Leary 3 august 1875 with Margaret Mac Lennan from Fiddown, place marriage Fiddown  (ANNEX). Later John worked as ship purser. Sometimes, when on leave he stayed in Fiddown. So his work was either near a port in Ireland or a port in England (Liverpool)?

18.8.52 Catherine, Fiddown        reg 7, page 111

17.5.55 Alice, Fiddown               reg 7. page 124

7.2.58 Bridget, Fiddown              reg 7, page 133

8.1.64 Anastasia, Fiddown          reg 7, page 149

I am also interested to know what happened with the siblings of my greatgrandfather James O Leary:

John, Patrick, Alice, Bridget and Anastasia/ Statia?.

About Sister Catherine Leary I already fond information. She married James Dooley and moved to Tralee Cty Kerry where they had 8 children. Catherine died in Tralee in 1901.

I would be very happy if I could get advice for a visit in the Fiddown/ Piltown area..

If one of the questions such as about Michael Leary could be answered, that would be great.

If you need more information, please let me know.

Kind regards,

  • Dear Peter:

Welcome to the Ireland Reaching Out message board.

The civil parish of Fiddown is located within the catholic parish of Piltown.  The other names that it is known by are Owning and Templeorum.

The parish registers date from about 1803.  They are available through Roots Ireland and also the National Library of Ireland (free).  I have looked at Roots Ireland for a baptism record for Michael Leary, but the only one showing is in Thomastown on 8 January 1827 with parents listed as Thomas Leary and Anastasia Foley.

As Michael married in Fiddown (Templeorum) and remained there, it is possible that he was a native of that place. It may be worth your while to go through the NLI parish register of Templeorum for the few years before and after 1825 to see if he is listed.  It may not have been transcribed.   Fiddown is on the border of Kilkenny, Waterford and Tipperary, and it is not too far from the Waterford coast.

You may be able to trace his children forward using the Civil registration records and the 1901 and 1911 Census records.  If you know either of the daughter's married names, look for them in the 1901 and/or 1911 Census.  In addition, you may be able to check for births, marriages and deaths using the information that you have.

There are several graveyards in the Piltown area:  Ardclone and Owning.  I don't believe that these have been transcribed through the Historic Graves website, but they are in the process of doing so.  You may be able to access these records through FindAGrave and/or other sites.  (www.interment.net)

You can also create an Ancestor Profile through the XO Chronicles feature located at the top of this page.  You can create as many profiles as you wish.  These profiles are widely read and others may be researching the same family,

Finally, another good source for information is newspapers.  Irish News Archives is a subscription site that may be useful for you.  If you have a subscription with FindMyPast. they have a newspaper collection for Ireland which may help.

The very best of luck with your research.

    Kind regards,

    Dear Jane,

Thank you very much for your extensive and useful answer. You may have found my ancestor Michael Leary!

Looking in the Census 1901 and 1911 did not give any new information than about the ancestors who stayed in Piltown including my grandfather John Joseph O Leary (grandson of Michael).

I did find Michael leary in Griffith Valutation. See a copy hereunder. How can it be checked if he is our ancestor and is  the same person as the one you found? Maybe you can advise me?

Maybe you can advice me who to lool further on the following:

There is familyinformation from Maureen Colette Flanagan, cousin of my mother Maureen O Leary.

One of the four daughters of Michael Leary (mentioned in my original posting) married a man named Dooley who came from Tralee. So far I could not find him. Also familyinformation: maybe they moved to the County of Cork.

She had 2 daughters and 7 sons. When she died the family was brought up by the eldest daughter called Kathleen The other sister was called Eileen and she married Patrick Flanagan of Kilkenny. Thier son John Jsopeh Flanagan married my mother cousinn Maureen Colette Egan . John Joseph had also a brother called Patrick who became a priest.

Wish you a merry christmas and a happy new year!

    warm regards,

  • Sorry Jane

Am addition about one of the four sisters O Leary born in Fiddown, daughters of Michael leary from the same source Mrs Maureen Flanagan.

Kathleen, the eldest Kathleen who brought up the familyy, married John Lee from Cork, who was in the British Army in Ireland. Kathleen and John had three sons: John, Cyril and James. John had one daughter who lived in Cork. Cyril died as a child. James became a doctor and practised in Hull. His wife and son still lives in Hull. Maureen Colette Flanagan, who lived near Brighton, England,  stayed in touch with till her death in 2003. So advice is most welcome how to proceed. I can look at the Census 1901 , 1911 in Cork/ County Cork looking for the Lee family. Other suggestions?

    Best wishes,

    Peter

  • Dear Peter:

It sounds as if you have a good bit of information to assist you with further research.

If you want to concentrate on the land that Michael Leary occupied in Griffith's Valuation, it would mean that you will have to follow that parcel of land from that time forward.  This can be done through the Valuation Office in Dublin, but it will mean that you will have to go there as those records are not online as yet.

If you want to try to trace forward one of the daughters as you have mentioned, you can do so by looking through Civil records which are available online through the Irish genealogy website.  You can also use those records to trace them through the 1901 and 1911 Censuses if they remained in Ireland.  The website link for the Irish Genealogy website is:  https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/civil-search.jsp

You may also wish to add any one of your ancestors to our XO Chronicles which link is available at the top of this page.  These profiles are read by all our members, are updated weekly and often attract the interest of others who may be researching the same family.

The best of luck with your research.  Please let me know if you have further questions.

    Kind regards,

    Jane

  • Dear Jane,

I think I made a mistake about Michael Leary. He was born 1804/1805, according to the deathcertificate from Piltown. Not 1825, sorry!

Assuming that the deathcertificate I have from Michael Leary, he died at 6 april 1879 in Piltown aged 74. Anne Leary was present and his death. His son James was married to Anne Kean.

So he was born in 1804 or 1805. Not 1825, my apologies!

I am not completely sure if this is indeed my great greatgrandfather: he was tailor but here his profession mentioned his laboure. However, many mistakes were made. Such as calling his wife sometimes Bridget Dalton where he name was definitely Bridget Gaul.

I could not Michael baptism, the one I saw are from diffent counties. According to family stories he may have come from Cork (or county Cork).

Maybe you could show me the right direction?

    Best wishes,

    Peter

  • Dear Peter:

Thanks for your post.  You will need to have some dates or particular years in order to effectively search for your ancestors.

If you would create a profile for one of the ancestors and put it up on the XO Chronicles, that would be a great help.  Include as much information as you have with dates and places, and names.  These profiles are viewed by our members and someone else may be searching for the same family.  If you have any difficulty creating a profile, let me know.

    Kind regards,

    Jane
