I am looking for any information on my great grandfather Michael Francis Craigh/Creagh/Craig and /or his familty.  He was born in Charleville, County Cork in August 1867 and immigrated to New York City in 1890. We know very little about his family in Ireland except that his family were Roman Catholics from Charleville and according to his New York death certificate dated 26 April 1905, his father's name was James Craigh and his mother's name was Ellen Dohany(?) Craigh..  He became a US citizen on July 17, 1895 and married Margaret Washington Brett (born: April 1870, Freshford, County Kilkenny) on September 8, 1895 in New York City.  They lived in New York City, where he was a street laborer,  and had 4 children, James (1896), Mary Ellen (1898), Michael (1900) and Thomas John (1902) until his death from TB in 1905.  Shortly after his death, Margaret moved her young family to Greenwich, Connecticut where she raised her family and remained until her death in May 1962.

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

My initial searches on the subscription site Roots Ireland for Michael Craig did not yiled any records. Margaret Britt/Brett was easier. She had four older siblings: Mary 1857 James 1859 Michael 1863 Elizabeth 1867 I also located a transcription of her parents marriage in 1855.

I will continue looking for Michael Francis.

It took me awhile to find a baptismal record for Michael in 1866 in Co. Limerick in Effin parish not far from Charleville. I did not find a related civil birth record.

He had a brother James born in 1861. He also had a sister Mary born 1872 in the Kilmallock workhouse  https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/birth_retur…

  • Roger and Jane,

Thanks so very much for not only your quick response but also the information you have been able to provide regarding Michael Creagh and his family.  I was able to print out the birth record of his sister Mary from the link you provided to the Irish Genealogy website but have been unable to access the baptism records for either Michael or his brother James, born in 1861, so if you could provide the link it would be much appreciated.  I look forward to learning anything further regarding our familiy in Ireland and will soon be posting inquiries regarding our other great-parents from County Cavan and Longford.  Also feel free to contact me via email if you would like at: cappycwaters@gmail.com

    Kindest regards,

Cappy Craig Waters (Tommy Craig's sister)

  • Cappy:

The records above for James and Michael were from the subscription site Roots Ireland. I went on the parish register for Effin and located the actual entry on the parish register for the Michael baptism and it is at this link. https://registers.nli.ie/registers/vtls000634978#page/51/mode/1up

I then went on the Charlesville register and when I went to January 12, 1861, there was no entry for James.I then looked at 1862 and sure enough, he was actually baptized in Janiuary 1862.

  • Carmel O'Callaghan,

Unfortunately, I'm not traveling to Co. Cavan soon. I'm creating a heritage book for my family, so I'm trying to gather all information possible. Looking forward to my travels to Ireland (planning for May) and knowing even more family information, though!

    Roger,

Thank you so much for your research and linking to the documents, really appreciate it!
