My great grandmother was Margaret Riordan b. ca 1852 in Ballina, Tipperary. She was the daughter of Patrick Riordan and Margaret (sometimes "Peggy") McNamara (sometimes "Mack").
Margaret had six siblings that I have found, but there may be more. The ones I know of are:
John b. ca 1848; Winifred b ca 1850; Patrick b.ca 1857; Martin b ca 1860; Bridget b ca 1862; Mary b ca 1865.
Winifred emigrated in 1878; Martin in 1883; Margaret, Bridget and Mary together, in 1881. All came to Sydney NSW.
Margaret married Michael Hogan from Monsea/Puchaun Tipperary in Sydney on 27 Aug 1889. She died following childbirth (the child did not survive) on 6 June 1897, leaving one son, my grandfather, James Joseph Hogan b. 25 Nov 1895.
I am looking for any information I can get about this family and would love to make contact with other descendants of the Riordan family.
I am coming to Ireland in May 2019 and will be visiting Ballina. If anyone there can assist me with my searching I will be very grateful.

There are 8 Michael Hogan birth/baptisms on rootsireland from Monsea RC 1840 to 1859; do you have a birth year? Was he RC?

Hello Jane,
Many thanks for your quick response. I have already heard from ColCaff - is he your local volunteer? He has provided auite a bit of information from rootsireland - some of which I had and some I didn't have. So that's great!
We will be staying at Coolbaun near Lough Derg from 23 May 2019 until 27 May 2019. During that time we'd like to come to Ballina and have a look around - maybe check out the RC cemetery for any Riordans, and generally look at the area in which my great frandmother and her family were born. If we can make contact with any descendants of my Riordn family that would be wonderful.
If anyone has any information about where the Riordan family lived that will also be very welcome.
Cheers for now
Julie

Hello ColCaff
Many thanks for your information and the fast response. To deal with the last part first - I have been extremely lucky tracing my Hogan family to date. The Monsea Ireland XO volunteer, Lulu, met us when we were in Ireland in 2017 and she was absolutely fabulous to us. She actually found a 4th cousin of mine and he was able to take us to places where the Hogans lived etc. So thanks for your offer, but I am OK with that side of the family.
With the Riordans, I have only recently, finally found where they came from as a result of tracing Martin Riordan in Sydney. I believe he was a good friend of Michael Hogan - they both worked as hansom cab drivers in Sydney. The information I listed in my email was all from rootsireland - although you have found some information that I missed. And I think I might have some not in your email. Between us we'll probably get them all! I'll have a look at what you have provided, and may come back to you on this too.
Any information about the marriage of Patrick Riordan and Margaret McNamara would be helpful, and of course, who their parents were. If there is any information about where they lived in Ballina - that would also be welcome.
My husband and I will be in Coolbaun near Lough Derg from 23 - 27 May 2019 and would love to meet up with you while we are there.
Kind regards
Julie Quigley

Many of our volunteers reply who live elsewhere, but we strive to try to connect all our visitors with local volunteers who can meet with them. I have forwarded the query to Lulu and she will probably reply to you in the next while. Please let me know if you need any further assistance.
