Hullo

My great g/mother was Jane Gaffney.  She was the daughter of Peter Gaffney and Catherine Barton.  Peter was a mill manager. I have no knowledge of the siblings of either Peter or Catherine.

I don't have any records for their marriage which occurred in 1882, Clara.  I understand that these records are unavailable??

I would like to meet some family when I visit Ireland early in September so any information that would shed some light on the families would be most welcome.

    Tara McGrath Geraldine Buckley Smith I've done a big of digging and have located a baptism record for what I believe is your friends Great grand aunt - Mary Gaffney who is recorded as the daughter of Peter Gaffney and Catherine Barton from Tubber. The problem is she was baptised on 30 Dec 1855 - some 30 years before she states they were married!!

    Firstly, thank you so much for your efforts, your "digging".  I think what you've found is a sibling of Jane Gaffney.  I've calculated her year of birth from her death age, 55, which occurred 1916, making her birth 1861, approx.  There is an age difference then of approximately six years which is quite feasible.   A most interesting find. What do you think?

    Is there such a townland / village of Tubber in this County?  Should it be Tobar, on the Clara Rd, south of  M6?

  • Hi Marilyn, yes Tubber / Tobar are one and the same place. Located just outside Clara on the road to Moate.

    I looked at the 1901 and 1911 census and there are several Gaffneys residing in Clara at the time.
