  • Jo,

The families were born long before the start of statutory birth registration in Ireland (1864) and so to try and trace them you need to use church records. You haven’t said what denomination the families were but I’ll assume RC. Unfortunately Termonamongan’s baptism records don’t start till 1863 so you won’t find any record of them there. Tracing them may be difficult.

Do you know what Timothy’s occupation was? I checked the tithe applotment records for the parish in 1828 and there were no Timothy Kelly households listed. (The tithes mostly listed farmers). There were 2 McPhillimy farms in the parish, Edward & William both of whom lived in Altgoland:

  • Thankyou,Elwyn.

Both the Kelly & McPhellamy family were RC.Timothy Kelly & Denis McPhellamy were both farm labourers.(This is stated on the shipping records).James McPhellamy was a son of Denis. On James McPhellamy's death certificate it states that he was born in Edenreagh 1816.

I should have mentioned that on that same ship 'Herald' was Timothy Kelly's brother & family. He was Miles/Myles Kelly, wife,Unity & children. The three families settled and farmed in the Maitland area of NSW,Australia. We have not been able to find any descendants or information regarding the Kelly's in Ireland.Perhaps once the two Kelly brothers & families sailed for Australia there were no family members left in Ireland.

    Thanks again.Jo

  • Labourers are notoriously difficult to trace in the early 1800s. Apart from church records (which we know don’t exist in this case) there are very few records to search. And they often moved around to follow available work. I think you may struggle to find anything on these families. Sorry not to have a more positive message.
