Nelly Brady, County Cork

Do you have the names of Nelly's parents? Likely she was Ellen Brady on civil records. Also, I would believe that she was likely born before 1879 and maybe St. Patrick's Day is not her real birth date. A number of emigrants from Ireland changed their birthday to St. Patrick's Day or Christmas when they came to their new home. There is also the possibility that Nelly left from Queenstown Cork but was from another county e.g. Cavan.

Hi Rodger, Thanks so much for answering my questions. Unfortunately not much is known about her. I only found out her name this past year when I found a family tree that a family member had made years ago. She died when my grandmother was an infant and she and her sister were raised by someone else. Years ago my uncle visited the church where she was married in New Jersey but there were no records for them. I didn’t know about emigrants changing their birth dates but just curious, what makes you think the birth year may be wrong also? I really didn’t expect to find any information on her but I thought I would take a shot. Her husband’s family were from County Clare but he was born here in the states. Maybe she was from there too. Actually just a hunch. Nelly was just shy of 19 when she married based on 3/17/1879 and since I question the 3/17 date, I also would question 1879. I could be wrong.

I searched the free site www.irishgenealogy.ie for all Ellen Brady civil birth records in 1879. There were six. One in Dublin city had a birth date of March 21st. The others were in different months.
